Differentiation of forest technologies according to ecosystem properties is a necessary step to achieve sustainable forestry. A forest typological system is considered to be the basic unit of ecosystem differentiation in the Czech Republic. Terrain characteristics, potential water erosion and applicable harvest technology were examined for 44 forest sites in a landscape segment of the Jizerské hory Mts. Forest site was found homogeneous in terms of terrain and technological properties. Edaphic category and groups of forest types as higher classification units and management sets as units of alternative classification showed lower homogeneity insufficient for operational planning.

The paper analyses the representation of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) (hereinafter spruce) in relation to different conditions of forest sites. The analysis is based on data from the National Forest Inventory conducted in the Czech Republic in 2001-2004 (hereinafter NFI), stratified according to units of the Forest Site Classification System (Plíva 1971, 2000). Results of the analysis provide a structured image of the current share of spruce. The formerly published information on the natural share of spruce was corroborated and the recommended share of spruce in the target species composition of the spruce management system was analyzed. The analysis documents the applicability of NFI data in the technical discussion concerning the future form of forest ecosystems in the Czech Republic. The results can be used as the groundwork for concrete forest management decision-making and will contribute to the study of the biological diversity of forest ecosystems.

The forest sites and soil survey conducted by the Bureau for Forest Management and Geodesy, Branch in Lublin in the years 2009–2010 involved all of the Roztocze National Park (RNP). The studied area was 8335.31 ha. Throughout the Park, 417 soil sampling plots (open pits) and 2,400 auxiliary soil sampling plots (soil boreholes) were established. A total of 28 soil subtypes, subsumed under 14 soil types, were identified, with the most abundant soil type being rendzina. Furthermore, 17 forest site types were described, including 12 lowland and 5 upland forest site types. Two upland forest types (upland broadleaved forest and upland mixed broadleaved forest), were found to be predominant in the National Park.

Abstract The aim of the article is to assess the extensive database of memorial trees operated by AOPK CR (Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic) and to determine the occurrence and abundance of the most monumental trees in chosen biogeographical units, (altitudinal vegetation zone, altitude, ecological series (Buček & Lacina, 2002), province, subprovince, bioregion (Culek et. al., 1996)) and the maximum size and age they can reach in these units. This assessment of monumental trees at a national level was made possible based on the provision of two extensive databases containing the information about the trees (AOPK CR Database of Memorial Trees) and about the biogeographical units of the Czech Republic (Biogeographical Registry of the Czech Republic). Basic unit of both databases is cadastral area and the fact allowed to link the data and to evaluate them. The occurrence rate of memorial trees and species in individual cadastral areas and in biogeographical regions is presented in the map outputs.

17 forest sites in three Swiss cantons (Berne, Solothurn, Fribourg)were investigated mycologically during a four year period to find out to what extent higher fungi are bound to specific forest sites and whether they are suitable for characterizing forest types. The species lists reveal a species specific dependency on soil pH: 32% of the inventorized fungal species can be found in the whole pH range, 50% were found only in acid soils up to a pH of 5.75, and 18% in only neutral to alkaline soils. The species fructifying on slightly acid to neutral soils are considered to be possible indicator species for such environmental changes as acidification or eutrophisation. The present classification of higher fungi into pH-classes and forest types is a tentative one. The data set will be supplemented with further observations in order to attain a more definitive classification. These preliminary analyses, however, already reveal the suitability of higher fungi for characterizing and classifying forest types. The four-year investigation showed that pure coniferous forests are richer in macromycetes species than generally supposed and also that they harbour a higher percentage of mycorrhizal fungi than deciduous forests.

Plantations of Serbian spruce (Picea omorika [Panč.] Purkyně) reach an age over 70 years at the Masaryk Forest Training Forest Enterprise (TFE) at Křtiny. They occur at different sites of the TFE, which is situated north of Brno between Blansko, Jedovnice and Brno in the Czech Republic. The paper presents an assessment of primary mensurational values (diameter at breast height d.b.h., height h, Derbholz volume m<sup>3</sup>), fertility, mortality and general health condition. The present registered number of Serbian spruce trees is 425 (from originally 750 individuals) in 25 localities and 12 GFT (groups of forest types). A comparison of Serbian spruce mensurational data with growth tables indicated that Serbian spruce on GFT 4K makes up for the tabular mean values of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) in yield class +1.
