The quality of 'Kensington' mangoes (Mangifera indica Linn.) from 2 major Queensland production regions was evaluated following a hot air [HAT, also known as vapour heat (VHT)] disinfestation treatment (46.5�C seed surface temperature held for 10 min under conditions of high humidity) combined with a disease control treatment (55�C water for 5 min) prior to HAT, and storage conditions likely to be encountered during air shipment to Japan (either 10�C for 5 days plus 22�C for 5 days, or 13�C for 5 days plus 22�C for 5 days, or 22�C for 10 days). Final quality was optimum if fruit were treated with HAT alone and stored at 22�C. Fruit injury, in the form of skin browning and lenticel spotting, was particularly severe in HAT plus disease controI fruit stored at 10/22�C. Storage at 10�C combined with heat treatments may be too stressful to fruit physiology, leading to fruit injury and reduced fruit quality at the market destination.

To determine the potential of using own-rooted trees to lower tree height and delay the decline in tree vigor caused by root clogging, the growth, yield, and fruit quality of pot-planted ‘Aikou’ mango (Mangifera indica L.) trees propagated by air layering and grafting were observed for 8 years after planting. The trunk diameter of the own-rooted trees propagated by air layering (hereafter abbreviated as own-rooted trees) was significantly smaller than that of the grafted trees propagated by conventional methods (hereafter abbreviated as grafted trees), but there were no significant differences in the scion diameters of the grafted trees. Moreover, no significant differences were observed in leaf number or total length of green branches between the own-rooted and grafted trees during the final 3 years. The height of the own-rooted trees was significantly shorter than that of the grafted trees. Although no difference in the fresh or dry weight of the aboveground part and whole tree was observed between the own-rooted and grafted trees, the fresh and dry weights of the underground part of the own-rooted trees were significantly lower than those of the grafted trees. Furthermore, the T-R ratio (the weight of the aboveground part of the tree excluding the leaves/the weight of the underground part of the tree) of the own-rooted trees was significantly higher than that of the grafted trees. Overall, no significant differences in yield or fruit quality were observed between the two tree types, and the average yield per 1 m2 over 6 years was 2.9–3.1 kg. These results indicate that it may be possible to lower tree height, delay the decline in tree vigor caused by root clogging, and prolong the life span of pot-planted trees by using own-rooted trees.

Fruits are susceptible to insect pest infestations, bird attack, various pathogens, and mechanical damages, all of which can reduce their commercial value and thereby cause significant yield and economic losses. The objective of this study was to control mango pests and diseases as well as to improve the fruit quality of mango through bagging technology. An investigation was performed during the year 2016 from March to July for safe mango production by applying minimum use of pesticide entitled studies on influence of bagging on physico-chemical properties and shelf life of mango cv. Langra. The mango fruits were bagged at marble stage (40 days from fruit set) with different types of bags which constituted the various treatments viz: T1: Brown paper bag; T2: White paper bag; T3: Polythene bag T4: Muslin cloth bag; T5: No bagging (control). Bagging with brown paper bag and white paper bag improved fruit retention, weight of fruit, diameter of fruit, pulp weight, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid, percent of citric acid, reducing sugars and β-carotene at harvest and ripe stage over control. Brown paper bag changed fruit color. In all cases good quality, cleaner, disease and insect free fruits were harvested. The sensory qualities in fruits of brown, white and muslin cloth bags were improved over control. Pre-harvest bagging also reduced occurrence of spongy tissue and the incidence of mealy bugs. These results indicate that fruit bagging can improve fruit quality through reduction in disease and insect-pest attack and shelf life of mango cv. Langra.
