Background: Acute respiratory tract infection are a major cause of global morbidity and mortality. Observational studies report consistent independent association between low serum concentration of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D and susceptibility to acute respiratory tract infection. This study was done to assess serum vitamin D level in children and correlation with respiratory tract infection.Methods: The present study was undertaken in department of paediatrics medicine, Patna Medical College and Hospital in patients attending out-patients department (OPD) as well as admitted in in-patients department (IPD). Assessment of serum 25(OH) Vitamin D was done by the enzyme immunoassay kit at Patna Medical College and Hospital.Results: The mean serum vitamin D level in cases was (20.52±5.64 ng/ml) where as in control group was (26.46±4.52 ng/ml) with a statically significant p value of <0.0001, hence cases are associated with vitamin D deficiency.Conclusions: The finding in this study showed significantly decreased mean serum vitamin D level in cases than that of control which implies that vitamin D deficiency predisposes to respiratory tract infection in children.

Fatigue is characterized by reduced energy level, decreased muscle strength, and a variable degree of cognitive impairment. Recent evidences seem to link vitamin D deficiency to fatigue. The aim of this study was to assess and compare vitamin D status in a cohort of older subjects with and without fatigue. We recruited a total of 480 subjects, 240 patients with fatigue and 240 controls without fatigue, from the Cannizzaro Hospital of Catania (Italy). Fatigue severity was measured by the fatigue severity scale, whereas mental and physical fatigue were measured through the Wessely and Powell fatigue scale, respectively. We also measured several blood parameters and 25-OH vitamin D. Subjects with fatigue showed lower levels of vitamin D as compared with those without fatigue. Blood levels of parameters related to fatigue were normal in both groups of subjects, however, platelet, hemoglobin, hematocrit (p < 0.05), mean corpuscular volume, C-reactive protein (CRP), iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid (p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the fatigue group with respect to the control group. Moreover, compared to controls, patients showed higher scores in the physical (p < 0.001), mental (p < 0.001), and severity (p < 0.001) fatigue scales. Finally, vitamin D inversely correlated with fatigue severity (r = −0.428, p < 0.01), whereas creatine kinase and CRP levels did not correlate with vitamin D. In conclusion, our data showed a direct link between vitamin D and fatigue in older subjects, suggesting translational implications in the diagnosis and management of these patients.

Introduction The aim of this study was to compare serum vitamin D between fertile and infertile men in endemic area of vitamin D deficiency. The role of vitamin D in all aspects of human health has attracted a great interest. Vitamin D effect on female fertility and to a lesser extent in men is under investigation. Previous researchers have found meaningful positive relationship between semen quality and serum vitamin D level. However, in endemic area of vitamin D deficiency, this effect is under question. Methods Serum 25-OH-Vitamin D was compared between infertile male patients and fertile control group. Infertile cases were from patients of our infertility clinic and fertile controls from healthy cases with at least one child below 5 years of age. SPSS version 19 was used for statistical analysis (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Mann-Whitney test). Results Between 116 fertile and 114 infertile men who entered the study, serum level of 20 was a critical point, which patients with upper serum level had significantly better spermogram. In addition to it, even in vitamin D deficient patients and controls, fertile controls had higher serum vitamin D. Conclusions There is a positive correlation between serum level of vitamin D and spermogram quality, even in vitamin D deficient areas. Fertile people have a higher level of serum vitamin D in comparison to infertile patient in aforementioned areas.

Background: One of the frequent health problems that regularly occurs in Indonesia, as a tropical country is an acute respiratory tract infection, including influenza. Since immunological benefit of vitamin D already proven, hypothetically, vitamin D can be used as protective agent to prevent influenza or other respiratory tract infections. Objective: This evidence-based case report was focused on the evaluation of protective ability of vitamin D supplementation to prevent influenza or other acute respiratory tract infections.Methods: Literature searching was conducted on PubMed data base and Cochrane Library using the related keyword combinations.Results: Two randomized-clinical trials (RCTs) and a meta-analysis study were fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Vitamin D supplementation did not reduce the incidence of influenza but reduce the incidence of non-influenza infection. High-dose vitamin D supplementation had no effect on the reduction of acute respiratory tract infection incidence. The meta-analysis concluded that vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk for acute respiratory tract infection and the stronger effects occurred on low-levels of vitamin D serum.Conclusion: Vitamin D supplementation may prevent acute respiratory tract infections, especially in subjects with low-levels of vitamin D serum.
