Subject. The article discusses the possibilities of cone-beam computed tomography in the study of the anatomy of the mental foramen: size, shape, topography, as well as the optical density of bone tissue at the mental foramen. The goal is to investigate the size, shape and topography of the mental foramen, as well as the optical density of bone tissue in it using cone-beam computed tomography. Methodology. The computed tomograms of the lower jaws of 26 patients were analyzed, according to which the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the mental openings were measured on the right and left, the number and sizes of additional mental openings, their location according to the Tebo and Telford classification, and the bone mineral density under the mental opening were determined. Statistical analysis was carried out using Microsoft Excel, Windows 9. Results. The resulting average dimensions of the right (4.01x3.93 mm) and left (3.81x3.95) mental holes confirm the results of more extensive studies done earlier. In the first case (1.9 %), an anatomical variation of the mental opening was revealed: 3 holes with dimensions 2.1×2.1 mm, 2.0×0.9, and 1.9×2.4. The symmetrical location of the chin foramen was found in 15 patients (57.7 %). In most cases, types III (25 %) and IV (53.84 %) of the location of the mental opening were identified. The average optical density of bone tissue under the mental foramen on the right side was 1618.9±145.1 HU, on the left ― 1571.64±159.64. There were no significant differences in the optical density of bone tissue for types II―IV of the location of the mental foramen. Conclusions. A significant variability in the topography of the mental foramen was revealed, in this regard, methods of mental anesthesia with a personalized approach, for example, the method of anesthesia of the intraosseous part of the chin nerve, are becoming relevant (authors Rabinovich S.A., Vasiliev Yu.L., Tsybulkin A.G.). High values of the optical density of bone tissue at the mental foramen confirm the ineffectiveness of diffusion of anesthetics through the cortical plate.

Aim: Knowledge of the position of the mental foramen is important to prepare strategy when administering regional anesthesia, performing dental surgical procedures, endodontic treatments. Also, it is critical to analyze diameter of mental foramen in sagittal, coronal, and axial images.  The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the diameter of the MF in different planes from CBCT images. Methodology: This study was designed at Department of Endodontics, Dicle University, Diyarbakır, Turkey. One hundred twenty three (67 female, 56 male) CBCT scans that met the study criteria were obtained. All images were obtained from i-CAT (Imaging Sciences International, Hatfield, PA). Data were analyzed using Student’s t-tests and Tukey HSD tests. Results: For the analysis of age, data were divided into four groups: 12–17, 18–29, 30–49, and ≥50 years. The data were also divided into two groups by gender. Axial and coronal image measurements were also divided into right and left. There was a statistical difference compared with females and males (p<0.05). In the coronal plane, the right region showed significant differences in measurements between the groups (p<0.05). In the axial plane, there was no statistically significant difference between them (p>0.05). The differences between the groups in the left region in the axial plane measurements were significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: Using CBCT imaging superimposition of anatomical structures can be eliminated. It is important that determine that the size of the mental foramen. Objective: The purpose of this study is to utilize cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to compare the bone mineral density (BMD) on the affected versus nonaffected side, among individuals with hemifacial microsomia (HFM). Methods: This retrospective study included 9 patients with HFM. Pretreatment CBCT volumes were imported into Invivo5 software, which was used to measure BMD through Hounsfield units (HU) in 3 regions of the mandible; inferior to the lower lateral incisors, inferior to the first molar and at the ramus inferior to the sigmoid notch. Each region was measured at the buccal cortical bone, lingual cortical bone, and cancellous bone. The densities on the right and left sides were compared by Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: Overall, the BMD on the affected side tended to show slightly lower values when compared with the nonaffected side. Differences ranged from 14 HU at the lingual cortical plate of the first molar region to 234 HU at the buccal cortical plate of the ramus region. Differences were only statistically significant at the ramus region for the buccal ( P = .002) and lingual ( P < .001) cortical plates and at the lower incisor region at the buccal cortical plate ( P = .016) and cancellous bone ( P = .044). The differences, however, did not seem to be clinically significant. Conclusions: The current study shows that the quality of bone on the affected side may be slightly reduced but did not seem to be clinically significant. This should be accounted for during surgical and orthodontic planning for patients with HFM.

Background. Mental foramen is important in surgical operations of premolars because it transfers the mental nerves and vessels. This study evaluated the variations of mental foramen by cone-beam computed tomography among a selected Iranian population.Materials and Methods. A total number of 180 cone-beam computed tomography projections were analyzed in terms of shape, size, direction, and horizontal and vertical positions of mental foramen in the right and left sides.Results. The most common shape was oval, opening direction was posterior-superior, horizontal position was in line with second premolar, and vertical position was apical to the adjacent dental root. The mean of foremen diameter was 3.59 mm.Conclusion. In addition to the most common types of mental foramen, other variations exist, too. Hence, it reflects the significance of preoperative radiographic examinations, especially 3-dimensional images to prevent nerve damage.

Introduction. The mental foramen (MF) is a bilateral opening localized on an anterior surface of the mandible. A precise location as well as well-defined shape, size, and number of the MF is crucial for different clinical dental procedures. The aim of this study was to determine a size and location of the MF in relation to the lower teeth using the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) study. Material and Methods. In a group of 201 patients (106 males and 95 females) the CBCT images were performed using the GX CB-500 device (Gendex, USA). Results. No significant differences in values of the horizontal (H) and vertical (V) diameters as well as the H:V ratio on both sides in relation to the age of participants were found. In males both average values of a horizontal diameter (p=0.031) and vertical diameter (p=0.001) were significantly higher on the right side than in the female subgroup, whereas on the left side only an average value of a vertical diameter was significantly higher in men (p=0.006) in comparison to women. Moreover, the H:V ratio was significantly lower in males on the left side (p=0.032). There were no significant relationships between age and gender of the patients (p>0.05) and the type of mental foramen on the right and left sides. Conclusions. The application of the CBCT study enabled a precise determination of the shape, size, and position of the mental foramen in relation to the neighboring anatomical structures on a representative group of the Polish patients. The results obtained may contribute to guidelines for dental procedures including anesthesia of the mental nerve and endodontic, implantology, and dental surgery with regard to the location of mental foramen depending on the sex and age of patients.

The study involved an analysis of optical density of the maxillary and mandibular bone tissue based on cone-beam computed tomography data. It has been shown that the structure and bone tissue density depend on the severity of diabetes mellitus and complications. The results of the study revealed a significant decrease in the bone tissue optical density at the tooth necks in people suffering from diabetes mellitus, whereas fewer changes were manifested at the middle third of the dental roots. Minor changes or even an increase in the optical density were observed at the dental root tips.

Abstract Background The proximity of the maxillary sinus floor to the maxillary molar roots increases the probability of oroantral communication on conducting any surgical or endodontic procedure in the involved area. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between each maxillary molar root and maxillary sinus floor using cone beam computed tomography. Predicting the probability of protrusion of each root into the sinus will consequently predict the probability of occurrence of the oroantral fistula in a sample of the Egyptian population. Results The total number of roots located outside the sinus was 121 (35.3%), while those contacting the sinus floor were 80 (23.3%) and those intruded the sinus were 141 (41.2%). The percentage of root intrusion into the sinus in males (56.9%) was significantly (p = 0.01) higher than females (42.9%). The probability of root intrusion in the left molars (54.2%) was non-significantly (p = 0.067) higher than that of the right side (44.3%). As for the type of tooth, the second molar showed the highest probability of root intrusion into the sinus (55.3%) followed by the third molars (52.6%) then the first molars (40.9). According to the type of root, the mesiobuccal root showed the highest probability of intrusion into the sinus (50.9%) followed by the palatal root (49.1%) then the distobuccal root (47.4%). However, the difference in both type of tooth and type of root was statistically non-significant (p = 0.051 and 0.869 respectively). As for the individual root with the highest probability of intrusion, the mesio-buccal root of the right third molar is the most frequent root to intrude the sinus (71.4%) and the mesio-buccal root of the right first molar is the least frequent (22.7%). Conclusions In a sample of the Egyptian population, males exhibit higher probability of root protrusion into the sinus than females. The side and type of tooth are of higher impact on the probability of its intrusion into the sinus compared to the type of root. Left second molars are at a higher risk of oroantral communications on surgical or endodontic procedures compared to other molars due to its highest probability of intrusion into the sinus.

Inflammation of the pulp is most common and difficult to diagnose. For it radiographs is necessary. One attempt to do is to assess its histogram and density. Radiography equipment that has the ability to analyze is cone beam computedtomography (CBCT). The purpose of this study is to analyze radiograph of the pulp chamber histogram: peak value,grayscale and trends, as well as the density on the condition reversible and irreversible pulpitis condition. The populationof this descriptive study is secondary data of CBCT-3D radiographs during 2012-2013. Selected sample of 75 data isreversible pulpitis, irreversible pulpitis 80 data, as well as 20 normal condition data as control. Data were analyzed byone way ANOVAand are presented in tables and graphs. The results showed that the value of the histogram under normalconditions showeda different significance for both the peak value of the reversible or irreversible pulpitis (p= 0.01). It isdifferent with a grayscale value, showed no significant different between normal with reversible pulpitis (p =0.997) and significantly different between normal and pulpitis reversible against pulpitis irrebversible (p= 0.03-0.01). There is a growing trend change is on the right direction of reversible and irreversible pulpitis. It was concluded that the irreversiblepulpitis, density and histogram shows the direction of more luscent compared with normal and reversible pulpitisconditions.
