The review of FRP structures radius zones ultrasonic non-destructive testing techniques is given in the paper. It is shown that both single-element piezoelectric transducers and phased arrays can currently be used to solve this problem. It is necessary to use special tools for positioning and creating an acoustic contact with both types of transducers. Ultrasonic testing using the described tools allows detecting defects in radius zones up to 6 mm in size.

The article discusses the types of dangerous defects in welded joints. The main methods of non-destructive testing are described, their advantages and disadvantages are briefly reflected. The comparison of the automated ultrasonic testing methods with radiographic ones is given on the example of testing the welded joints of ASME DN350 Py250 pipe fittings with a thickness of the welded edges of 53.9 ÷ 61.3 mm. The comparison results of the methods by the criterion of the accuracy of determining the coordinates of defects are presented, which show the expediency of replacing the automated ultrasonic method with the radiographic one, provided that the thickness of the welded edges is shallow.

Introduction. The aim of this study is to evaluate the productivity and reliability of non-destructive testing techniques for the inspection of structural welds employed in the Hong Kong construction industry. Method. Manual ultrasonic pulse echo method and semi-automatic ultrasonic techniques using phased array (PAUT) as well as radiographic testing were employed. Five classes of defects were analyzed: lack of penetration, lack of fusion, crack, porosity and slag inclusion. The tests were carried out on the specimen made from structural plate, on which artefacts were inserted on the weld metal. The results were being studied to compare the defect detection reliability by both ultrasonic techniques. The flaw detection productivity using phased array is also compared with conventional ultrasonic testing at a determined rate. Results. The reliability of PAUT was 100% compared to 96.7% with manual ultrasonic testing, however with the inclusion of defect sizing and tolerance the reliability of manual UT is dropped to 57.4%, which implies there is a chance of 42.6% of improper sizing). PAUT exhibits the reliability of 87.5%. The research will be continued with the aim of determining the most appropriate and reliable NDT methods in each case.

Abstract Through Silicon Via (TSV) is the most promising technology for vertical interconnection in novel three-dimensional chip architectures. Reliability and quality assessment necessary for process development and manufacturing require appropriate non-destructive testing techniques to detect cracks and delamination defects with sufficient penetration and imaging capabilities. The current paper presents the application of two acoustically based methods operating in the GHz-frequency band for the assessment of the integrity of TSV structures.
