I was asked to review this book in my role as a clinical educator and novice practice developer. My introduction to practice development and person-centred practice came through the 2019 Inspire Improvement Fellowship, run by the Foundation of Nursing Studies, and through my work as a practice teacher for student specialist practitioner district nurses at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. My initial thoughts were how relatable this book is to me in practice. It is up to date, with references to Covid-19 and the WHO’s Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020. The first part explores the theory of practice development and this follows through to later chapters where readers will find the application of theoretical ideas in practice. Practice development is explored at micro, meso and macro levels, supported by the book’s progression from smaller, ward-based projects to large system-based interventions. The evolution of practice development is also evident, moving from its origins within nursing to multidisciplinary and interagency approaches and contexts. I found it useful that chapters flowed through themes, with the final chapters focusing on leadership, workplace cultures and wellbeing, which are currently hot topics in the ever-changing landscape of health and social care. A wide range of references is helpfully used throughout to encourage more in-depth analysis and further reading.

AbstractObjectivesTo explore the psychosocial well-being of health and social care professionals working during the COVID-19 pandemic.DesignThis was a qualitative study deploying in-depth, individual interviews, which were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was used for coding.ParticipantsThis study involved 25 participants from a range of frontline professions in health and social care.SettingInterviews were conducted over the phone or video call, depending on participant preference.ResultsFrom the analysis, we identified 5 overarching themes: communication challenges, work-related stressors, support structures, personal growth, and individual resilience. The participants expressed difficulties such as communication challenges and changing work conditions, but also positive factors such as increased team unity at work, and a greater reflection on what matters in life.ConclusionsThis study provides evidence on the support needs of health and social care professionals amid continued and future disruptions caused by the pandemic. It also elucidates some of the successful strategies (such as mindfulness, hobbies, restricting news intake, virtual socialising activities) deployed by health and social care professionals that can support their resilience and well-being and be used to guide future interventions.Strengths and limitations of this studyThis is the first study in the UK to interview both health and social care professionals working in a range of settings on their experiences working through COVID-19.This study used a strong theoretical approach to inform the topic guide, and one-to-one interviews allowed in-depth analysis of the psychosocial experiences of health and social care professionals, complementing the wider availability of quantitative evidence.We interviewed a wide range of professions, which provided breadth of experience but might limit the specificity of findings.Given the fluctuating nature of the pandemic, attitudes of health and social care professionals may change over time. This can be challenging to capture during a single interview, however we did ask questions on how their experience had progressed longitudinally.Our sample may have been biased towards people who had more free time to participate and so were coping better than others. However, our sample still described a number of stressful experiences during the pandemic, and it is also possible that workers who were frustrated or stressed wished to express their views.

Purpose Positive behavioural support (PBS) as a framework for delivering quality services is recognised in important policy documents (CQC, 2020; NICE, 2018), yet there is an absence in the literature on how this could be implemented on a large scale. The purpose of this paper is to describe a recent implementation of a workforce strategy to develop PBS across social care and health staff and family carers, within the footprint of a large integrated care system. Design/methodology/approach A logic model describes how an initial scoping exercise led to the production of a regional workforce strategy based on the PBS Competence Framework (2015). It shows how the creation of a regional steering group was able to coordinate important developmental stages and integrate multiple agencies into a single strategy to implement teaching and education in PBS. It describes the number of people who received teaching and education in PBS and the regional impact of the project in promoting cultural change within services. Findings This paper demonstrates a proof of concept that it is possible to translate the PBS Competency Framework (2015) into accredited courses. Initial scoping work highlighted the ineffectiveness of traditional training in PBS. Using blended learning and competency-based supervision and assessment, it was possible to create a new way to promote large-scale service developments in PBS supported by the governance of a new organisational structure. This also included family training delivered by family trainers. This builds on the ideas by Denne et al. (2020) that many of the necessary building blocks of implementation already exist within a system. Social implications A co-ordinated teaching and education strategy in PBS may help a wide range of carers to become more effective in supporting the people they care for. Originality/value This is the first attempt to describe the implementation of a framework for PBS within a defined geographical location. It describes the collaboration of health and social care planners and a local university to create a suite of courses built around the PBS coalition competency framework.

ObjectivesTo identify how social return on investment (SROI) analysis—traditionally used by business consultants—has been interpreted, used and innovated by academics in the health and social care sector and to assess the quality of peer-reviewed SROI studies in this sector.DesignSystematic review.SettingsCommunity and residential settings.ParticipantsA wide range of demographic groups and age groups.ResultsThe following databases were searched: Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, Econlit, Medline, PsychINFO, Embase, Emerald, Social Care Online and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Limited uptake of SROI methodology by academics was found in the health and social care sector. From 868 papers screened, 8 studies met the criteria for inclusion in this systematic review. Study quality was found to be highly variable, ranging from 38% to 90% based on scores from a purpose-designed quality assessment tool. In general, relatively high consistency and clarity was observed in the reporting of the research question, reasons for using this methodology and justifying the need for the study. However, weaknesses were observed in other areas including justifying stakeholders, reporting sample sizes, undertaking sensitivity analysis and reporting unexpected or negative outcomes. Most papers cited links to additional materials to aid in reporting. There was little evidence that academics had innovated or advanced the methodology beyond that outlined in a much-cited SROI guide.ConclusionAcademics have thus far been slow to adopt SROI methodology in the evaluation of health and social care interventions, and there is little evidence of innovation and development of the methodology. The word count requirements of peer-reviewed journals may make it difficult for authors to be fully transparent about the details of their studies, potentially impacting the quality of reporting in those studies published in these journals.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42018080195.

Abstract Background Public services for people with dementia living in the community face significant resource constraints. The aims of this study are to identify an optimum mix of services for six dementia case types and to gain a greater understanding of the resource allocation decision making process. Methods Irish datasets were used to identify dementia cases types representing 46% of cases in the datasets. Vignettes were prepared for six case types ranging from low to high dependency and needs. Carers, people with dementia and health and social care professionals (HSCPs) took part in mixed methods workshops. Initial findings for the HSCPs are reported here (N=23). HSCP participants firstly quantitatively identified an optimum care package for a set of six vignettes, then qualitatively discussed the needs and individual case factors that were driving service recommendations. The quantitative exercise was repeated with a budget constraint. The sessions finished with a discussion on service and case prioritisation. Results When no budget constraint is imposed, participants recommended the use of a wide range of services. Home help, in-home respite and day care services comprised 62% of spending in this scenario. When a budget constraint was imposed, participants focused on essential care and reduced services aimed at prevention, quality of life and carer support. Resources were not redistributed between cases (e.g. from low need to higher need cases) as a similar proportion of the budget was allocated to each of the cases in both scenarios. Conclusion People with dementia living in the community and their families have a wide range of health and social care needs. Optimum dementia care packages included a wide range of services to meet these needs. However, a budget constraint resulted in a much narrower range of services with consequent implications in terms of unmet need and a reactive rather than preventive approach to care.
