Introduction: In Portugal, requirements for selection and training of General Practice trainers vary across the different regions of the country. The aim of our study was to assess the satisfaction of general practice trainees with their trainers of the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Regional Health Administration.Material and Methods: General Practice trainees were the target population for our cross-sectional, exploratory study. The authors developed a 16-item questionnaire based on the existing literature. The questions covered the following domains: patient safety, learning environment, trainer’s feedback, the trainee/trainer relationship, assessment of educational progress and continuous professional development of trainers. Items were scored on a 5-point Likert-type scale. Data was collected at a meeting in October 2018 attended by General Practice trainees.Results: A total of 384 questionnaires were distributed, with a response rate of 59.9%. The majority of respondents were female (79.9%) and all years of specialty training were represented. Our study shows that 60.4% of General Practice trainees from the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Regional Health Administration are very satisfied with the teaching skills of their trainers. However, there was lower satisfaction with trainer’s continuous professional development, trainer’s feedback, and monitoring of educational progress. The majority (57.4%) of respondents did not give feedback to their supervisors about their teaching performance, mostly because they do not feel comfortable doing so or because they have not considered this.Discussion: The findings show a high degree of satisfaction of the general practice trainees with their trainers of the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Regional Health Administration. The high response rate attained is one of the strengths of the study. The authors make some suggestions for improvement of domains with lower satisfaction levels. Unfortunately, it is difficult to extrapolate the findings nationwide due to the differences between the training programmes of the different regions.Conclusion: Although there is a high level of satisfaction, there is still potential for improvement, including the expansion of training programmes for trainers.

In-service training of teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) is as a core instrument of continuous professional development of EFL teachers. Within the context of nowadays education policies, the issue of in-service training has become of topical importance. It requires systematic approach based on the analysis of individual EFL teachers’ needs and receptive practices in developing in-service teacher-training programmes. In view of that, a survey was conducted among EFL teachers in Estonia to discover the areas of in-service training they are interested in. Based on the survey results, a model of an in-service training module to implement in order to meet the needs of EFL teachers in Estonia is proposed, and it is placed against the background of in-service teacher training provided in Estonia. The module could be included into in-service teaching training programmes not only in Estonia, but in a wider European context. BackgroundThe NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) was introduced in 2015 and is mandatory for NHS trusts. Nine indicators have been created to evaluate the experiences of black and minority ethnic (BME) staff compared with the rest of the workforce. The trust data published showed a poor experience of BME staff compared with non BME staff.AimTo introduce the concept of WRES into general practice and create a baseline from which improvement can be made. A diverse workforce will better serve its population and this will improve health outcomes.MethodWe conducted a survey among all general practice staff members, clinicians, and non-clinicians and asked open-ended questions built around four WRES indicators most applicable to general practice, over a 6-week period in August and September 2019.ResultsWe collected 151 responses out of a total workforce of around 550. The response rate between clinicians and non-clinicians was equal 50.6% versus 49.4%. The distribution of non BME staff 51% versus BME staff 49% mirrors the diverse population of Lewisham. 54% of BME staff experienced bullying from patients, their relatives, and members of the public. 25% experienced bullying from a colleague or staff member in the workplace and 22% of BME staff changed jobs as a result of this.ConclusionBME staff in general practice report high levels of racism, especially from service users. In 22% this led to a career change. A zero-tolerance policy needs to be enforced and a multi-pronged approach is required to address this.
