ABSTRACT Female adolescents are prone to iron deficiency anemia due to regular menstrual cycles and loss of basal, thus requiring sufficient iron intake from food consumed daily. The concept of the Health Belief Model which consists of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefit, perceived barrier, and self efficacy helps to take action on the prevention of anemia. This study aimed to analyze the correlation of knowledge, the Health Belief Model, and consumption patterns with anemic status at Saint Stanislaus High School. This study used a cross-sectional design. The population in this study were all female students in grade X and XI of Saint Stanislaus Senior High School, totaling 84 people. The cluster random sampling technique was used to calculate the total amount of samples, totaling 46 people as the sample of this study. The data collected included respondent characteristics, knowledge rate, construction of Health Belief Model, consumption patterns of iron source foods differentiated into levels of adequacy and frequency of eating, and anemia status. The results of this study showed that 14 of the respondents aged 16 years experienced anemia (30.43%). The correlation of knowledge and the incidence of anemia significantly correlated, with a p-value of 0.044 (p <0.005). Meanwhile, constructs of the Health Belief Model and the level of adequacy of food consumption of iron sources had no correlation with the incidence of anemia (p> 0.005). The frequency of kale consumption as a source of non heme iron had a correlation with the incidence of anemia (p <0.005). This study concluded that there was a correlation with knowledge and the incidence of anemia in Saint Stanislaus High School students. Proper nutrition education based on the concept of the Health Belief Model can be given to students to let them have an understanding, good attitude, and practice prevention measures for anemia well. Keywords: knowledge, Health Belief Model, iron consumption pattern, anemic

Nutrition has a direct role in creating, maintaining and improving of health. Breakfast is considered as one of the main meals and snacks as a major part of energy and nutrients supplier for children. This study aim to comparison between pamphlets and SMS instruction on breakfast and snack food consumption pattern based on the Health Belief Model among girls in high schools of Sheiban City. This intervention study involved three groups that were conducted by the two intervention groups and a control group among 300 female high school students. To determine the samples, three schools of girls and from each school 100 students were selected using random sampling method. The tools of data collection was a questionnaire which validated by a panel of experts and test-retest reliability and Cronbach's alpha calculation. Educational intervention was distribution of pamphlets and texting to the pamphlet and SMS groups, respectively. The statistical analysis of variance and covariance of collected data were performed by SPSS software version 22. The results were significant at level of P≤0.05. Comparing the two control and tested groups showed that mean score of Health Belief Model (susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, self-efficacy and cues to action) as well as breakfast and snack food consumption behavior scores of students significantly increased after the educational intervention in the intervention group compared to the control, but the education effects in both groups were similar. Education based on Health Belief Model by SMS and pamphlets was effective on breakfast and snack consumption behavior. There was no significant difference between educational effects of two methods.

Delivering cancer education is one of the strategies for implementing health promotion and disease prevention programs. Moreover, cancer education can help people understand the risks related to specific behaviors that can trigger cancer during later life stages. This study examines the cancer perception of high school students (median age: 14 years) using a photovoice based on the health belief model. Students were requested to take photographs to answer the framework question: “How is cancer present in your surrounding?” A theoretical thematic analysis was conducted to develop codes, and the narratives completed by the participants on the SHOWED checklist were used to create contextualization. With the use of the health belief model, the following factors were determined: risk factors and environmental pollution (perceived susceptibility), symptoms (perceived severity), prevention and screening (benefits), ignorance and poverty, and ineffective laws and regulations (perceived barriers). Linked to these themes, students’ narration demonstrated the risk of developing cancer if the same environment and inadequate regulations persisted. This study highlights the need to incorporate the participation of adolescents in the design, implementation, and monitoring of several community issues to help address several unanswered questions.
