The article describes an interdisciplinary study that uses the means of ethnology and materials science. This approach is quite unusual in the Czech environment. Specifically, it concerns detailed materials analyses of samples of plaster which were acquired during ethnological research on selected recent buildings in South Moravia. The studied plaster samples from folk buildings in the Znojmo area are probably from the twentieth century. However, it cannot be ruled out that the buildings are older. In addition to traditional and mostly inorganic pigments, the plaster samples were also coloured using synthetic pigments, which corresponded to their availability on the market. Besides the description of the set of samples, the article also demonstrates the potential of applying natural-scientific methods to analyse plaster and its pigments for ethnology. At present, these methods are common in materials engineering and are used in restoration work.

This issue of Microscopy and Microanalysis contains selected papers from the fifth Regional Workshop of the European Microbeam Analysis Society (EMAS) on Electron Probe Microanalysis—Practical Aspects that took place May 22–25, 2002 at Szczyrk, Poland. The meeting was organized by the Polish National Branch of EMAS in collaboration with the Silesian University of Technology (Faculty of Materials Engineering and Metallurgy) and the Polish Academy of Science (Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science).

This is an interdisciplinary study of how Kiowa men and women made, wore, displayed and discussed expressive culture. Kiowa men and women used the arts to represent new ways of understanding and representing Kiowa identity that resonated with their changed circumstances during the Progressive Era and twentieth century. Kiowas represented themselves individually and collectively through cultural production that emphasized the significance of change and cultural negotiation, gender, the ties and tensions over tribally specific and intertribal identities.

The purpose of this chapter is to show how design-based research (DBR) methodologies can be implemented in technical programs. First, the authors provide a background of recent research in interdisciplinary education, Integrative Graduate Education Research Traineeship (IGERT) programs, and design-based research. Second, a brief summary the example case, a Pedagogy module which has been implemented with Materials Science and Materials Engineering students through an IGERT program, is discussed. The final portion of the chapter presents a new implementation model for DBR along with recommendations and strategies for interested faculty, department heads, or motivated graduate students to reform existing technical curricula using design-based research. The significance of the book chapter rests in the flexibility of this model to be adapted to any program, showing instructors the iterative process for developing a course to suit the needs of a department.

Abstract The development of the electron microprobe by Raymond Castaing provided a great stimulus to materials science at a critical time in its history. For the first time, accurate elemental analysis could be performed with a spatial resolution of 1 µm, well within the dimensions of many microstructural features. The impact of the microprobe occurred across the entire spectrum of materials science and engineering. Contributions to the basic infrastructure of materials science included more accurate and efficient determination of phase diagrams and diffusion coefficients. The study of the microstructure of alloys was greatly enhanced by electron microprobe characterization of major, minor, and trace phases, including contamination. Finally, the electron microprobe has proven to be a critical tool for materials engineering, particularly to study failures, which often begin on a micro-scale and then propagate to the macro-scale with catastrophic results.

Celebrated due to the aura of mystery attached to his rediscovered works in the twentieth century, Georges de La Tour’s paintings continue to be an object of scholarly interest and public fascination. Exploring the representations of light, vision and the visible in his works, this interdisciplinary study raises seminal questions regarding the nature of painting and its artistic, theological, and conceptual implications. If the visible presents an enigma in La Tour’s pictorial works, this is because familiar objects of visible reality serve as emblems of an invisible, spiritual reality. La Tour’s pursuit of likeness between image and the natural world bears the influence of the Catholic Reform’s call for the revitalization of religious imagery in the wake of Protestant iconoclastic outbreaks. Like the books shown in his paintings which are asking to be read, La Tour’s paintings are examined not just as visual depictions but also as instruments of insight, which ask to be deciphered rather than merely seen. La Tour’s paintings show how the figuration of faith as spiritual passion and illumination challenges the meanings attached to the visual realm of painterly expression. This study shows that La Tour’s emphasis on spiritual insight opens up a broader artistic, philosophical and conceptual reflection on the conditions of possibility of painting and its limitations as a visual medium. By scrutinizing what is seen and how and by questioning the position of the beholder, his works encourage meditation on the role of painting and its engagements with the visible world.

In an interdisciplinary workshop in the former Iron Curtain borderlands of the Czech Republic and Bavaria seven multi-national artists and one European ethnologist revealed the cultural dynamics of boundaries both by exploring an expressive landscape and memory field, and by experiencing cultural difference as reflected in the co-operation and creation processes within the group. By using ethnographic approaches to assist the process of developing and conceptualising artworks and self-reflexive, ethno-psychoanalytic interpretation, the project followed the impact of twentieth-century border frictions and violence into collective identities, but also the arbitrary character of borders. The results suggest how a multi-perspective, subjectively informed methodology of approaching space and spatially expressed memory could be developed both for ethnology and for art, bridging the supposed gap between 'artistic' and 'scientific' methods by combining their strengths in a complementary way.
