Following surveys recently carried out in Maputo estuary, a survey with the purpose of acquiring data required to characterize the estuary was carried out in December 1983. After reviewing the hydrology of the tributaries to the estuary, the parameters to be monitored - salinity, conductivity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen, are referred. Finally, taking also into account previous information available, an evaluation of the results, and an assessment of the estuary are done. The estuary can be classified as well mixed, since the vertical salinity gradients found are small. The Umbeluzi estuary, however, is partially mixed. Temperature decreases with the depth, and when moving downstream. Some pollution was found along the lower part of the estuary, probably due to the discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater, which brings the dissolved oxygen figures below the saturation level. As for the upper part of the estuary, the dissolved oxygen levels are not only dependent on the pollutant load, but also on the growing of algae, which by photosynthesis under daylight produce oxygen that dissolves into the water. Quite often, the dissolved oxygen figures are above the saturation level. The growth of algae could be due to the input of phosphorus and nitrogen brought in by the tributary streams. A pollutant load discharged upstream could be the reason for some pollution seen in the Umbeluzi estuary.

Background: Legume plants are known for their rich medicinal and nutritional values. Large amount of medicinal information of various legume plants have been dispersed in the form of text. Objective: It is essential to design and construct a legume medicinal plants database, which integrate respective classes of legumes and include knowledge regarding medicinal applications along with their protein/enzyme sequences. Methods: The design and development of Legume Medicinal Plants Database (LegumeDB) has been done by using Microsoft Structure Query Language Server 2017. DBMS was used as back end and ASP.Net was used to lay out front end operations. VB.Net was used as arranged program for coding. Multiple sequence alignment, phylogenetic analysis and homology modeling techniques were also used. Results: This database includes information of 50 Legume medicinal species, which might be helpful to explore the information for researchers. Further, maturase K (matK) protein sequences of legumes and mangroves were retrieved from NCBI for multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis to understand evolutionary lineage between legumes and mangroves. Homology modeling technique was used to determine three-dimensional structure of matK from Legume species i.e. Vigna unguiculata using matK of mangrove species, Thespesia populnea as a template. The matK sequence analysis results indicate the conserved residues among legume and mangrove species. Conclusion: Phylogenetic analysis revealed closeness between legume species Vigna unguiculata and mangrove species Thespesia populnea to each other, indicating their similarity and origin from common ancestor. Background: Mangrove plant extracts are used in folkloric medicine as aphrodisiac, sedative, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antimalarial. Screening for antimicrobial, phytochemical and antioxidant activities of fourteen mangroves plant species (Aegiceras corniculatum, Acanthus ilicifolius, Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Avicennia officinalis, Bruguiera cylindrica, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Ceriops tagel, Excoecaria agallocha, Kandelia candel, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Sonneratia alba, and Sonneratia caseolaris) in various solvents are reported in this work. Methods: The antimicrobial screening was carried out using agar well diffusion method. In this study, nine pathogenic strains were used, including three Gram-positive and six Gram-negative bacteria. Phytochemical screening, total flavonoids, total phenolic and antioxidant activity was tested by DPPH radical scavenging assay. Four phenolic compounds (gallic acid, vanillin, tannic acid and quercetin) were quantified by LC-MS/MS in selected mangrove species. Results: Antimicrobial screening showed Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were most susceptible to ethyl acetate extract as compared to ethanol and methanol extract. Ethyl acetate extract of Avicennia marina and Bruguiera gymnorhiza showed strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of saponins, phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and terpenoids, which was found to be variable as per the solvent used for extraction. In addition, total phenolics and total flavonoids content with different solvents were found in the range of 11.08 to 196.76 mg GAE/g and 12.92 to 110.3 mg QE/g of extract respectively. Moreover, antioxidant capacities expressed in terms of IC50 (mg/mL) showed that methanol extract exhibited higher antioxidant capacity followed by ethanol extract. LC-MS/MS analysis showed gallic acid and tannic acid are present in higher concentration in Aegiceras corniculatum and Sonneratia caseolaris than other species. The vanillin and quercetin were found in the least concentration. Conclusion: Mangroves species are rich source of antioxidant, phenolics and antimicrobial compounds.
