Abstract The densification mechanism of doped CeO with Si3N4 powder during Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was investigated under temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1750 °C at soaking pressures of 30, 40, 50 MPa. Results showed that the relative density of Si3N4 ceramics sintered at 1650 °C and 30 MPa was 97.9%. A creep model was employed to determine the mechanism, which can be interpreted on the basis of the stress exponent (n). The results showed that the mechanism was controlled by liquid phase sintering at low effective stress regime (n=1).

In this study, spark plasma sintering (SPS) was applied to prepare α-Si3N4 ceramics of different densities with magnesia, silicon dioxide, alumina as the sintering aids. The sintering behavior and liquid phase sintering (LPS) mechanism were discussed and the factors influencing the density of the prepared samples were analyzed. Microstructures of sintered samples were observed and the phase compositions were analyzed. The results showed that α-Si3N4 ceramics can be sintered by SPS based on the reaction among α-Si3N4 and sintering additives which lead to the liquid phase and the density can be well controlled from 2.48 to 3.09 g/cm3 while the content of the sintering aids changes from 10% to 28.5% and sintering temperature from 1400°C to 1500°C.

In the present study, α-Si3N4 is prepared by using MgO and Al2O3 as the sintering additives and spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The SPS sintering mechanism is discussed. The relationship between the content of sintering additives, sintering temperature and relative densities of the samples is analyzed. The results suggest that when the sintering temperature is 1300-1500°C, the content of sintering additives is 6wt.%-10wt.%, the relative density of sintered samples is 64%-96%. When the sintering temperature reaches 1400°C, the content of sintering additives is 10%, the samples can be fully dense sintered and the relative density can be up to 95%. The sintering mechanism is liquid phase sintering. The bending strength of the sintered samples is 50-403MPa and has a close correlation with the relative density.

AlN ceramics doped with yttrium oxide (Y2O3) as the sintering additive were prepared via the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The sintering behaviors and densification mechanism were mainly investigated. The results showed that Y2O3 addition could promote the AlN densification. Y2O3-doped AlN samples could be densified at low temperatures of 1600-1700oC in 20-25 minutes. The AlN samples were characterized with homogeneous microstructure. The Y-Al-O compounds were created on the grain boundaries due to the reactions between Y2O3 and Al2O3 on AlN particle surface. With increasing the sintering temperature, AlN grains grew up, and the location of grain boundaries as well as the phase compositions changed. The Y/Al ratio in the aluminates increased, from Y3Al5O12 to YAlO3 and to Y4Al2O9. High-density, the growth of AlN grains and the homogenous dispersion of boundary phase were helpful to improve the thermal conductivity of AlN ceramics. The thermal conductivity of 122Wm-1K-1 for the 4.0 mass%Y2O3-doped AlN sample was reached.

AbstractThe cylindrical samples of TC4 titanium alloy prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) were compressed with hot deformation of 70% on the thermosimulation machine of Gleeble-1500. The temperature of the processes ranged from 850°C to 1,050°C, and the strain rates varied between 0.001 and 5 s−1. The relative density of the sintered and compressed samples was measured by the Archimedes principle. During hot deformation, the microstructure of the sample was observed. The results show that the average relative density of the samples was 90.2% after SPS. And the relative density was about 98% after the hot deformation of 70%. Under high temperature (>950°C), the sensitivity of flow stress to temperature was reduced. At low strain rate (0.001 s−1), the increase in the deformation temperature promoted the growth of dynamic recrystallization (DRX). At the same temperature, the increase in strain rate slowed down the growth of DRX grains. And the variation tendency was shown from the basket-weave structure to the Widmanstätten structure at a low strain rate (<0.1 s−1), with increase in the strain rate.

WC-10Co-0.8VC nanocrystalline powders were sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and hot pressing sintering (HPS), and the microstructure and properties were compared. Results show that, sintered at 1300°C, the sample prepared by SPS for only 3 minutes has higher density than that prepared by HPS for 60 minutes. SEM and SPM observation shows SPS at 1200°C has a more uniform and finer microstructure, and most of the WC grains are smaller than 100nm. It has a relative density of 95.1%, HV30 of 1887, and KIC of 11.5 MPam1/2. If a suitable sintering parameter is chosen, SPS is a promising consolidation technique to prepare nanocrystalline WC-10Co-0.8VC with improved properties.
