Abstract Objective Different post-sintering processes are expected to be a reason for alteration in the strength of zirconia. This study evaluated the effect of post-sintering processes on the flexural strength of different types of monolithic zirconia. Materials and Methods A total of 120 classical- (Cz) and high-translucent (Hz) monolithic zirconia discs (1.2 mm thickness and 14 mm in Ø) were prepared, sintered, and randomly divided into four groups to be surface-treated with (1) as-glazed (AG); (2) finished and polished (FP); (3) finished, polished, and overglazed (FPOG); and (4) finished, polished, and heat-treated (FPHT) technique (n = 15). Biaxial flexural strength (σ) was determined on a piston-on-three ball in a universal testing machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. Statistical Analysis Analysis of variance, and post hoc Bonferroni multiple comparisons were determined for significant differences (α = 0.05). Weibull analysis was applied for survival probability, Weibull modulus (m), and characteristic strength (σ0). The microstructures were examined with a scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. Results The mean ± standard deviation value of σ (MPa), m, and σ0 were 1,626.43 ± 184.38, 9.51, and 1,709.79 for CzAG; 1,734.98 ± 136.15, 12.83, and 1,799.17 for CzFP; 1,636.92 ± 130.11, 14.66, and 1,697.63 for CzFPOG; and 1,590.78 ± 161.74, 10.13, and 1,663.82 for CzFPHT; 643.30 ± 118.59, 5.59, and 695.55 for HzAG; 671.52 ± 96.77, 3.28, and 782.61 for HzFP; 556.33 ± 122.85, 4.76, and 607.01 for HzFPOG; and 598.36 ± 57.96, 11.22, and 624.89 for HzFPHT. The σ was significantly affected by the post-sintering process and type of zirconia (p < 0.05), but not by their interactions (p > 0.05). The Cz indicated a significantly higher σ than Hz. The FP process significantly enhanced σ more than other treatment procedures. Conclusion Post-sintering processes enabled an alteration in σ of zirconia. FP enhanced σ, while FPOG and FPHT resulted in a reduction of σ. Glazing tends to induce defects at the glazing interface, while heat treatment induces a phase change to tetragonal, both resulted in reducing σ. Finishing and polishing for both Cz and Hz monolithic zirconia is recommended, while overglazed or heat-treated is not suggested.

The present investigation has examined the impact of micro-SiC on microstructure, dislocation and mechanical behavior of Cu/SiC composite. The micro-composite samples have been fabricated under a constant pressure (480 MPa) and sintered temperature (860oC) for 2 h. The sintering process was performed under argon gas. The microstructure examination was conducted using SEM/EDS and XRD diffraction. The SiC contents were 0, 5, 10,15,20,25 and 30 volume fraction. The outcomes showed that the density was significantly decreased with an increase of silicon carbide content. The relative densities of Cu and Cu/SiC composites was ranged from 91.24% to 83.56% for pure Cu and Cu/30 vol%SiC composites. The copper crystallite size was reduced with growing SiC content while the hardness, ultimate and yield compressive strength increased with increment of SiC volume fraction to 20% vol. The values of hardness, ultimate and yield compressive strength increased to 231 HV,343 and 176 N/mm2 , respectively for the composite sample containing 20% SiC particles with a percentage increase of 75%,26.6% and 57.2% compared with pure Cu.

A one-step sintering process was developed to produce magnetocaloric La(Fe,Si)13/Ce-Co composites. The effects of Ce2Co7 content and sintering time on the relevant phase transformations were determined. Following sintering at 1373 K/30 MPa for 1–6 h, the NaZn13-type (La,Ce)(Fe,Co,Si)13 phase formed, the mass fraction of α-Fe phase reduced and the CeFe7-type (La,Ce)(Fe,Co,Si)7 phase appeared. The mass fraction of the (La,Ce)(Fe,Co,Si)7 phase increased, and the α-Fe phase content decreased with increasing Ce2Co7 content. However, the mass fraction of the (La,Ce)(Fe,Co,Si)7 phase reduced with increasing sintering time. The EDS results showed a difference in concentration between Co and Ce at the interphase boundary between the 1:13 phase and the 1:7 phase, indicating that the diffusion mode of Ce is reaction diffusion, while that of Co is the usual vacancy mechanism. Interestingly, almost 100 % single phase (La,Ce)(Fe,Co,Si)13 was obtained by appropriate Ce2Co7 addition. After 6 h sintering at 1373 K, the Ce and Co content in the (La,Ce)(Fe,Co,Si)13 phase increased for larger Ce2Co7 content. Therefore, the Curie temperature increased from 212 K (binder-free sample) to 331 K (15 wt.% Ce2Co7 sample). The maximum magnetic entropy change (−∆SM)max decreased from 8.8 (binder-free sample) to 6.0 J/kg∙K (15 wt.% Ce2Co7 sample) under 5 T field. High values of compressive strength (σbc)max of up to 450 MPa and high thermal conductivity (λ) of up to 7.5 W/m∙K were obtained. A feasible route to produce high quality La(Fe,Si)13 based magnetocaloric composites with large MCE, good mechanical properties, attractive thermal conductivity and tunable TC by a one-step sintering process has been demonstrated.

The high temperature(900oC~) thermal sintering process is necessary to fabricate the Solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs). However, the chemical reaction has occurred between solid oxide material components, electrode and electrolyte. In the case of lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ, LSCF) electrode, the SrZrO3(SZO) secondary phase is produced at the electrolyte interface even when using the gadolinium doped ceria(GDC) buffer layer for blocking the strontium and zirconium diffusion. The SZO layer hinders the oxygen ion transfer and deteriorates fuel cell performance. By using a novel flash light sintering(FLS) method, we have successfully solved the problem of secondary phase formation in the conventional high temperature thermal sintering process. The microstructure and thickness of the LSCF electrode are analyzed using a field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM). The strontium diffusion and secondary phase are confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometer method of SEM, TEM (SEM-, TEM-EDS). The NiO-YSZ anode supported LSCF cathode cells are adopted for electro chemical analysis which is measured at 750oC. The maximum power density of the thermal sintered LSCF cathode at 1050oC is 699.6mW/cm2, while that of the flash light sintered LSCF cathode is 711.6mW/cm2. This result proves that the electrode was successfully sintered without a secondary phase using flash light sintering.

The sintering process is a thermal agglomeration process, and it is accompanied by chemical reactions. In this process, a mixture of iron ore fines, flux, and coal particles is heated to about 1300 °C–1480 °C in a sinter bed. The strength and reducibility properties of iron ore sinter are obtained by liquid phase sintering. The silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) is the main bonding phase found in modern iron ore sinters. Since the physicochemical and crystallographic properties of the SFCA are affected by the chemical composition and mineral phases of iron ores, a crystallographic understanding of iron ores and sintered ore is important to enhance the quality of iron ore sinter. Scrap and by-products from steel mills are expected to be used in the iron ore sintering process as recyclable resources, and in such a case, the crystallographic properties of iron ore sinter will be affected using these materials. The objective of this paper is to present a short review on research related to mineral phases and structural properties of iron ore and sintered ore.
