In this paper, we describe the development and content of a mental skills training (MST) program and how a strength and conditioning coach/certified mental coach delivered this program within a United States Tennis Association (USTA) Player Development (PD) program. The purpose of the MST program was to create resilient, confident youth tennis competitors. Specific mental strategies (i.e., journaling, routines, breathing, imagery, self-talk) were identified to best meet the objectives of the MST program and were delivered using a three-pronged approach: (a) classroom lessons, (b) strength and conditioning sessions and on-court lessons, and (c) homework assignments. Specific ways that the USTA PD coaches reinforced the use of these strategies during tennis practice are described. Recommendations for coaches to integrate an MST program in high-performance youth sport environments are also provided.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to compare the plasma and serum monoamine levels in sedentary, untrained normotensive and hypertensive men at rest with levels measured after an acute bout of exercise and to compare similar measurements following a 12-week aerobic training program. PLACE OF STUDY: The data obtained for this study was collected from a clinic for the prevention of heart disease and cardiac rehabilitation (FITCOR) and analyzed in the Federal University of São Paulo (EPM), Laboratory of Experimental Neurology. SUBJECTS: Two groups of untrained male subjects, i.e., normotensive (N=16) and hypertensive (N=19), were submitted to an acute bout of exercise to analyze the acute effect of exercise on the monoamine levels. To study the chronic effect of exercise (physical training program), some individuals of each group were arranged in two other groups; normotensive (N=11) and hypertensive (N=8). MEASUREMENT: Plasma catecholamines and serum serotonin levels were determined by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrochemical detection. RESULTS: A significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure at rest was observed in the hypertensive group after the physical training program (p < 0.05). Only the mean plasma noradrenaline concentration increased significantly post-exercise in all groups of individuals (acute effect of exercise - p < 0.01 for untrained normotensive and hypertensive; chronic effect of exercise - p < 0.001 for untrained and trained normotensive, p < 0.01 for untrained and trained hypertensive). CONCLUSION: These data show the beneficial effect of physical exercise in reducing the blood pressure in hypertensive patients, which does not seem to be related to changes in circulating monoamines.

Abstract This study aims to identify mechanisms responsible for the achievements in the artistic gymnastics performance. The main mechanisms we have considered a priori as being mechanisms of change were: anxiety for high performance sport, general self-efficacy, specific self-efficacy in gymnastics, motivation in high performance sport, emotional skills and social skills. Gymnasts from 3 national clubs attended this study. The gymnasts were distributed in 3 lots. The subjects are between 8 and 10 years. Since this study aimed to monitor certain psychological variables and one of the participating group received psychological counseling, before intervention we submitted screening questionnaires related to emotional and behavioral disorders to all groups. All gymnasts attending the study received questionnaires related to each mechanism monitored both in the beginning and at the end of the emotional development program. During the study the gymnasts were distributed in three lots as follows: the first lot received in addition to classical training methods, an emotional training program and a complex technical training program; the second lot received the same complex technical training program as the first lot; and the third lot did not receive intervention program and the gymnasts were trained following the traditional training program. We have analyzed the results using the procedure described by Weersing, V.R. and Weisz, J.R. [19]: the Efficiency Test, the Specificity of Intervention Test, Mechanisms of Change Test; Mediation Test.
