Introduction: To further understand the effects of L-arginine on both its ability to enhance lactate clearance and increase overall blood flow before, during, and after exhaustive anaerobic exercise. Methods:  Twelve healthy male subjects between the ages of 18-25 first completed an initial visit where baseline data was recorded. Subjects completed three additional visits, in which they ingested either a placebo, two-gram or four-gram dose of L-arginine. Blood flow (BF) and lactate were recorded before ingestion of the treatment, 5 and 15-minutes post-ingestion prior to performing a push-up test to volitional fatigue.  Immediately following the push-up test, BF and lactate were assessed and again 15-minutes post exercise. Results: Blood lactate did not differ across condition (p=0.569).  Lactate clearance was not influenced by L-arginine when analyzing the Area Under Curve.  Blood flow increased with ingestion of the four-gram dose while at rest (the 15-minute mark).  Blood flow was also enhanced in the four-gram dose immediately after exercise at the 25-minute mark.  Conclusions: The data suggests that a four-gram dose of L-arginine plays a more significant role in blood flow than the clearance of lactate after exercise compared to a two-gram dose or placebo.

Thirty-two healthy male subjects (8 per cohort) were randomized 6:2 to active:placebo. LSVT-1701, an anti-staphylococcal lysin, was administered intravenously as a 6 mg/kg single dose and as 1.5, 3, and 4.5 mg/kg twice daily for 4 days. LSVT-1701 exposure increased in a greater than dose proportional manner and did not accumulate. Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were predominantly of mild intensity. The most common TEAEs were chills, pyrexia, headache, infusion site events, cough, rhinorrhea, and increases in C-reactive protein.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between basal metabolic rate (BMR) and all-cause mortality in southern Chinese adults.Methods: We prospectively examined the relationship between BMR and all-cause mortality in 12,608 Southern Chinese adults with age ≥ 35 years who participated in the National Key R&D Program from 2013–2014 to 2019–2020. Cox proportional hazard models were used to examine the association between BMR and all-cause mortality.Results: A total of 809 deaths (including 478 men and 331 women) occurred during a median follow-up period of 5.60 years. All-cause mortality was higher in elderly individuals than in non-elderly individuals (11.48 vs. 2.04%, P < 0.001) and was higher in male subjects than in female subjects (9.84 vs. 4.56%, P < 0.001). There was a significantly inverse relationship between BMR levels and all-cause mortality in elderly male individuals (adjusted-HR per SD increase: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.70–0.91, P < 0.001). Compared with BMR levels ≤ 1,115 kJ/day, there was lower all-cause mortality in third and highest BMR quartiles in the elderly male subjects (adjusted-HR: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.53–0.95, P = 0.022; adjusted-HR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.43–0.84, P = 0.003, respectively).Conclusion: An elevated BMR was independently inversely associated with all-cause mortality in elderly male subjects in a southern Chinese population.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of nutrition education on knowledge, attitude and practice levels of thirty volunteer osteoporotic subjects visiting orthopedic clinics of Davangere district of Karnataka state. Socioeconomic and nutritional status was assessed by standard procedures and nutrition education imparted on relevant aspects. A well-structured questionnaire of 15 statements with multiple answers was developed and used before and after one day counselling to determine knowledge, attitude and practice of the subjects. Hypertension was the common family medical history followed by diabetes mellitus and fractures. Absence of physical activities or exercises was evident. Rice was consumed on daily basis whereas ragi on weekly basis by maximum number of respondents. Grade I obesity was more prevalent among males (20%) than female (5%) whereas Grade II obesity was only observed in females (30%). Assessment of knowledge gain after nutrition education revealed that Per centage gain in knowledge was more among male subjects (54.8%) than female subjects (36.9%) and that of attitude for both the subjects was at a range of 35.6 to 36.5%. The per cent gain in practice was slightly higher among male subjects (19.3%) compared to female subjects (15.0%) The overall per centage gain of knowledge, attitude and practice for all subjects was 42.9 per cent, 37.4 per cent and 15.4 per cent respectively which was statistically significant (p<0.05) indicating the positive impact of nutrition education on KAP levels of the subjects.

Abstract Objective: Triglyceride–glucose index (TyG index) has been used in healthy individuals as a marker of insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) showed an increased risk of developing sarcopenia compared to control subjects. This study is performed to determine the association of TyG index with the presence of sarcopenia in T2DM patients. Method: This study included 1098 T2DM patients who were recruited from the inpatients in Qilu Hospital (Qingdao). Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum triglyceride (TG) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) were measured and used to calculate TyG index.Result: 119 male subjects (20.2%) had sarcopenia, while 72 female subjects (14.1%) had sarcopenia in T2DM patients. TyG index was correlated with a decreased risk of sarcopenia in both male and female T2DM groups. TyG index was found to be positively correlated with SMI after multivariate adjustment in male subjects. When TyG index was ≤9.5, TyG index was positively correlated with SMI. However, when TyG index was >9.5, there was not a significant association between TyG index and SMI. Moreover, TyG index was not correlated with SMI after multivariate analysis in female subjects. However, TyG index was positively correlated with SMI when TyG index was ≤9. When TyG index was >9, TyG index was negatively correlated with SMI, however, the correlation was not statistically significant. Conclusion: TyG index is inversely correlated with the presence of sarcopenia in type 2 diabetes patients.

This study examined the differences of knee joint forces between lowering to, or rising from squat, and typical final postures of squatting and kneeling. A biomechanical model of the lower limb was configured considering large knee flexion angles, multiple floor contact points, and the soft tissue contact between the thigh and calf. Inverse dynamics were used to determine muscle and compressive joint forces in the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joints. Data were obtained from a group of 13 male subjects by means of 3D motion capturing, two force plates, a pressure-sensitive pad, and electromyography. During lowering into the kneeling/squatting positions and rising from them, the model exhibited the anticipated high maximum forces of 2.6 ± 0.39 body weight (BW) and 3.4 ± 0.56 BW in the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joints. Upon attainment of the static terminal squatting and kneeling positions, the forces fell considerably, remaining within a range of between 0.5 and 0.7 BW for the tibiofemoral joint and 0.9 to 1.1 BW for the patellofemoral joint. The differences of the knee joint forces between the final postures of squatting and kneeling remained on average below 0.25 BW and were significant only for the tibiofemoral joint force.

The aim of this study was to determine aerobic fitness through the VO2max treadmill test of elite Bulgarian taekwondo players with international results, and to determine whether the aerobic system had an effect upon the sports result in taekwondo. Fourteen elite taekwondo athletes, members of the Bulgarian national team (8 male and 6 female) were tested using a continuous progressive treadmill test. Physiological characteristics such as maximal oxygen uptake(VO2max), blood lactate and heart rate were measured. The male athletes recorded 58.2±3.4 ml kg–1 min–1 and the female 46.0±2.8 ml kg–1 min–1. The lactate level reached its highest at the 6’ after the VO2max with results for the males of 11.5±3.7 (mmol l-1) and 9.9±4.1 (mmol l-1) for the females respectively. A comparison between our results, regarding VO2max and previously reported was made using the One-way Anova for independent samples. It showed no significant difference between the male subjects (58.2±3.4 versus 60.7±3.3 ml kg(-1) min(-1), p>.05) and significant difference between the female ones (46.0±2.8 versus 49.8±2.8 ml kg(-1) min(-1), p<.05). Investigated also was the number of kicks executed by the winner of -49 kg weight category and her direct opponents during the 2019 Grand Prix Sofia. It was discovered that the winner kicked an average of 86.25 times per match and her kicks during the Grand Prix Sofia accumulated to 390 in total. It is our conclusion that the aerobic fitness does not play a significant role in taekwondo.

Androgens have a complex role in the regulation of insulin sensitivity in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. In male subjects, a reduction in androgens increases the risk for insulin resistance, which is improved by androgen injections. However, in female subjects with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), androgen excess becomes a risk factor for insulin resistance. The exact mechanism underlying the complex activities of androgens remains unknown. In this review, a hormone synergy-based view is proposed for understanding this complexity. Mitochondrial overactivation by substrate influx is a mechanism of insulin resistance in obesity. This concept may apply to the androgen-induced insulin resistance in PCOS. Androgens and estrogens both exhibit activities in the induction of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. The two hormones may synergize in mitochondria to induce overproduction of ATP. ATP surplus in the pancreatic β-cells and α-cells causes excess secretion of insulin and glucagon, respectively, leading to peripheral insulin resistance in the early phase of type 2 diabetes. In the skeletal muscle and liver, the ATP surplus contributes to insulin resistance through suppression of AMPK and activation of mTOR. Consistent ATP surplus leads to mitochondrial dysfunction as a consequence of mitophagy inhibition, which provides a potential mechanism for mitochondrial dysfunction in β-cells and brown adipocytes in PCOS. The hormone synergy-based view provides a basis for the overactivation and dysfunction of mitochondria in PCOS-associated type 2 diabetes. The molecular mechanism for the synergy is discussed in this review with a focus on transcriptional regulation. This view suggests a unifying mechanism for the distinct metabolic roles of androgens in the control of insulin action in men with hypogonadism and women with PCOS.
