Several factors have been proposed by researchers to explain why organizations are motivated to introduce executive information systems (EIS) now. These are identified and categorized in this paper and the results of an empirical study which examined the relevance of these factors in practice are presented. The findings of the study question the relevance and validity of some of the factors that have been identified – most notably that EIS are being introduced at the request of executives who are becoming increasingly computer literate and see EIS as a means of coping with today's extremely competitive business environment. The study findings suggest that IS department push and EIS envy are factors which play a significant role in the emergence of EIS in organizations.

This paper reports on an empirical study to construct an objective and quantifiable method to assess the cost of sourcing from low wage, foreign suppliers. The work details development of a Total Acquisition Cost Model (TACM) that can be used to quantify the supply system costs associated with such sourcing strategies. In so doing, we explore the sourcing policies of a number of European and North American retailers operating in consumer goods sectors. A detailed case study demonstrates the potential inflexibility cost of offshore as opposed to onshore procurement. The research reveals how an understanding of these various metrics can be used to customize an operations strategy; reflecting the contingencies of the particular trading environment

To succeed in uncertain and constantly changing international business environment, firms need to adopt international project logistics. This paper explores the characteristics and analyzes the current situation related to the concept of international project logistics. The optimization model for transportation solution to international project logistics was established based on decision network planning technique and uncertainty theory. Stochastic programming theory was also applied to solve the model which allows decision-makers to reduce the total cost to as low as possible, guaranteed by a certain probability. Finally, an empirical study on international project logistics was conducted to verify the validity of the model. The knowledge gained from findings of this research can be used as framework for the development of international project logistics.

The objective of this paper is to identify the different framework characterizing the business environment and assess their impact on companies performance in order to identify the most dimension environmental affecting companies performance; new created as well as developed companies. Three mains categories of the business environment are suggested: socio-cultural, institutional and technological environment. To achieve this goal, our research is based on a literature review on the question followed by an empirical study on a sample of 96 companies to make the association between theory and reality An empirical study provides that the institutional and the technological factors are the most positively and significantly related to performance. Regarding the socio-cultural environment has a less significance on companies performance.

Forecasting enterprise bankruptcy is a critical area for Business Intelligence. It is a major concern for investors and credit institutions on risk analysis. It may also enable the sustainability assessment of critical suppliers and clients, as well as competitors and the business environment. Data Mining may deliver a faster and more precise insight about this issue. Widespread software tools offer a broad spectrum of Artificial Intelligence algorithms and the most difficult task may be the decision of selecting that algorithm. Trying to find an answer for this decision in the relatively large amount of available literature in this area with so many options, advantages, and pitfalls may be as informative as distracting. In this chapter, the authors present an empirical study with a comprehensive Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) workflow. The proposed classifier selection automation selects an algorithm that has better prediction performance than the most widely documented in the literature.
