A major reason for advocating for quality of work life has been the promise that it creates a win-win situation: improved employee satisfaction and welfare, hence increased productivity, longer employee tenure and consequently increased company profitability. Nevertheless, in the context of small to medium enterprises (SMEs), scant attention has been given to the empirical investigation into the influence of the quality of work life on employee tenure intention in Southern Africa. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap by examining the influence of SME employees’ perceptions of the quality of work life on their tenure intention and the mediating role of job satisfaction and job commitment in this relationship as far as Zimbabwe is concerned. Five hypotheses were posited and sample data of 282 were collected from Harare, Zimbabwe’s biggest city, to empirically test these hypotheses. The results of this study showed that, in the SME context, quality of work life positively and significantly influences employee job satisfaction, job commitment and consequently tenure intention. The managerial implications of the findings are discussed and limitations and future research directions are indicated.

The present study is a modest attempt to bridge the gap between the rich western theories and the under-researched eastern contexts, namely UAE and to deeply explore the organizational practices and the quality of work-life using the Status-Certainty-Autonomy-Relatedness-Fairness (SCARF) construct. In this study, we first present the five core values that make up the SCARF model. This model is then used as the research lens for studying organizational practices. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews relating to the perceptions of nine managers from seven organizations. The data were analyzed and discussed qualitatively using an explanatory matrix with the assistance of a qualitative data analysis (QDA) computer software package, called NVIVO software Version 9. We examined the effectiveness of these five values empirically to gain insight into organizational practices in the context of the UAE. An explanatory matrix emerged from the data that gives deep insights into organizational practices and to provide a structured explanation on these prevailing practices. The matrix also serves as the foundation of a theoretical model that could be used in future research to assess the quality of organizational practices. The study may be considered the first in the UAE to discuss workplace practices and the quality of work life. The main contribution of this study was the use of the SCARF model to investigate organizational practices and the use of dimensional analysis to derive and construct a theoretical model.

Objective of this paper was to observe trends and developments in quality of work-life research throughout the decades. Previous researchers mostly focused on systematic and general literature reviews. In this paper bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review were combined to observe the trends and developments in quality of work-life research. An electronic Scopus database search initially produced of 867 documents on quality of work-life. Further purposive screening reduced the documents to 752 altogether. Furthermore, a detailed literature review of top 10 most cited publications throughout the decades of quality of work-life research was conducted, to explore construct development, antecedents, and outcomes of quality of work-life. Bibliometric analysis revealed that most of the research was produced from United States, and in areas of business, management, and accounting. Literature review revealed that from 1970s to 1980s, the focus of quality of work-life research was mainly on construct development. From 1990s onward, researchers mostly focused on identifying antecedents and outcomes of quality of work-life at organizational and employee level. Findings of this research suggests various employee and organizational level factors which have been neglected by most influential studies of quality of work-life throughout the decades. Future researchers should focus on these factors to motivate government and organizations to incorporate these factors in their system, and to support the quality of work-life research.
