Terminalia tomentosa bark belongs to the family Combretaceae. The plant bark is astringent and useful in the treatment of ulcers, vata, fractures, hemorrhages, bronchitis, and diarrhea. Phytochemical investigation of T. tomentosa bark confirms the presence of flavonoids, polyphenols, and tannins. The plant has not been investigated for its anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic activity. The present study was undertaken to explore its possible anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic activity. Anti-inflammatory activity of alcoholic and aqueous extracts of the bark was assessed by in vivo methods. In vivo antiarthritic potential of the extracts was evaluated by Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis in Wistar rats. Our findings showed that the alcoholic and aqueous extracts exhibited anti-inflammatory activity at 500 mg/kg oral dose in carrageenan-induced hind paw edema and carrageenan-induced air pouch inflammation models. We also found alcoholic as well as aqueous extracts of the bark restored the altered blood and serum parameters caused by the Complete Freund’s Adjuvant-induced arthritis in Wistar rats. This study shows that the T. tomentosa bark extracts possess anti-inflammatory activity and have pronounced effects on adjuvant arthritis also. Future studies are necessary to provide deeper insight into the exact mechanism of the action of anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic activity of T. tomentosa.

Aloe emodin is isolated compound of aloe vera which is used traditionally as an anti-inflammatory agent. In vitro pharmacokinetic data suggest that glucuronosyl or sulfated forms of aloe emodin may provide some limitations in its absorption capacity. Aloe emodin was reported to have in vitro anti-inflammatory activity due to inhibition of inducible nitric oxide (iNO) and prostaglandin E2, via its action on murine macrophages. However, present work evidenced that molecular docking of aloe emodin modulates the anti-inflammatory activity, as well as expression of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2) in rodent. The AEC (4,5-dihydroxy-9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene-2 carboxylic acid) was synthesized using aloe emodin as starting material. The study was planned for evaluation of possible anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic activity in carrageenan rat induced paw oedema and complete Freund’s adjuvant induced arthritis in rats. The AE (aloe emodin) and AEC significantlyP<0.001reduced carrageenan induced paw edema at 50 and 75 mg/kg. Complete Freund’s adjuvant induced arthritis model showed significantP<0.001decrease in injected and noninjected paw volume, arthritic score. AE and AEC showed significant effect on various biochemical, antioxidant, and hematological parameters. Diclofenac sodium 10 mg/kg showed significantP<0.001inhibition in inflammation and arthritis.

Background: Inflammation is complex biological response of body tissues to foreign particles or pathogens. However, adverse effects of anti-inflammatory drugs, necessitate the search for a novel compound from herbal origin. Beta vulgaris rubra or red beetroot, a vegetable plant, is known to possess various beneficial effects. Present study aimed to evaluate the anti inflammatory effect of beet roots in animal models.Methods: Carrageenan-induced and Complete Freund’s adjuvant-induced rat paw edema model were used to assess the acute and chronic anti- inflammatory potential of the Beetroot as compared to standard drug, Diclofenac Sodium.Results: Oral administration of Beetroot extract showed carrageenan-induced rat paw edema inhibition by 26.9%, 34.6% and 50% for beetroot 100mg/Kg, 200mg/Kg and 400mg/Kg, respectively, at the end of four hours. In vivo results noted that percentage inhibition of paw volume and ankle diameter of the Complete Freund’s adjuvant-induced rats were significantly higher for the groups consuming 100 and 200mg/Kg Beetroot extracts. Paw volume of the rats in these two groups reduced by 35% and 30% respectively as compared to the control.Conclusions: Thus, beetroot was found to possess anti-inflammatory property in animals. Further investigations are essential to validate the bioactive components responsible for this property.
