<p>Designing a test is an uneasy task. It is proven by the fact that many teachers find difficulties in designing a good test. The present article attempts to review the English school exam in Indonesia and present an example of the test design of a midterm reading test for junior high school students in Semarang. To this end, firstly, a sample of test script of the school exam for JHS students in Semarang in the academic year 2017/2018 was reviewed. The review of the test shows that creating a good quality of test items still become a concern for English teachers as they made some grammatical errors. Consecutively, a midterm reading test was also designed and administered in a junior high school in Semarang, Central Java. Then, the test designed was evaluated by considering the validity, reliability, and practicality as suggested by (Brown &amp; Abeywickrama, 2010).  The administration of the test and evaluation show some weaknesses; therefore, the suggestions for the betterment of the test design are also made, such as revising some test items with a very low facility index and negative discrimination index. This study implicates pedagogically the teachers to train students on how to summarize and paraphrase since these skills underrepresented.</p>

ABSTRACT This paper attempts to analyze the test items in the English National Final Examination (UAN) for Junior High School Students in the academic year 2009/2010. This study aims at analyzing the compatibility of the test items of package A in reading and writing section of English National Final Examination for Junior High School Students with the standard of graduate competence and the cognitive domains used in the test. The data were collected by using documentary method, while in analyzing the data the writers focused on matching the compatibility of the test items with the Standard of Graduate Competence and identifying the cognitive domain used. From the analysis, it was found that the test items of package A in reading and writing section of English National Final Examination 2009/2010 were in line with the Standard of Graduate Competence (SKL) arranged by the government. The cognitive domains in reading section mostly used level of comprehension. The cognitive domains in writing section used the application and the synthesis level. ?é?á Key words: analysis, test items, national final examination

<p>The aims of this research are:(1) to find out whether the multiple-choice items of English summative test for the third grade junior high school students in Surakarta have fulfilled the criteria of good test or not; and (2)To describe whether the multiple-choice items of English summative test for the third grade junior high school students in Surakarta have fulfilled the criteria of good test item viewed from difficulty level, discrimination power, and distractor evaluation or not. The data were taken from 100 students‟ answer sheets in five schools in Surakarta. The test item was analyzed by using item analysis technique seen from the score and the language content analysis. The analysis was considered by using three aspects i.e. index of discriminating power, level of difficulty and the distractor evaluation. The research finding shows that (1) the difficulty level shows 13% for very difficult item, 22% for very easy item, and 64% for satisfactory item; (2) only 35% of all test items have appropriate index of discriminating power; and (3) only 49% of the distractors are effective since they were selected by the students. Based on the three criteria of a good test item above, there are only 46% of multiple choice items fulfilling the criteria of a good test items.</p>
