This study aims to identify the role of Muhammadiyah's higher-educational institutions in fostering religious tolerance in West Papua. Applying the qualitative method, this research is conducted in three Muhammadiyah higher-educational institutions in West Papua i.e., Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong (UM Sorong) Sorong City, Universitas Pendidikan Muhammadiyah Sorong (UNIMUDA) Sorong Regency, and Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Muhammadiyah Manokwari. The results showed that Muhammadiyah’s higher-educational institutions are inclusive in terms of spiritual understanding. In fostering religious tolerance there are three approaches taken by the three Muhammadiyah higher-educational institutions in West Papua: 1) social approach, 2) cultural approach, and 3) excellent service approaches. The strategies implemented the role includes: 1) disseminating Muhammadiyah’s vision and mission, 2) inculcating tolerance values since the beginning of students joining Muhammadiyah higher-educational institutions, 3) strengthening tolerance value by lecturing processes, conducting, sharing sessions both formally and informally, and 4) empowering student activity units and other facilities that support multicultural student interaction processes.

This article aims to identify teachers’ accountability in the context of higher educational institutions (HEIs). Most of the literature has used student-oriented outcomes as basic building blocks of accountability. This article contributes to the literature by gauging teachers’ perceptions in conceptualising accountability in the HEIs. Indicators of accountability have been identified from the literature. Decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method has been used to explore the nature of interrelationships among these indicators. Results reveal that accountability indicators have varying impact and some of these indicators have cause and effect type of relationship among them. The article underscores the role of performance-based accountability system (PBAS) which will help in assessing and evaluating teachers in the HEIs. It is argued that accountability strengthens the autopoietic nature of the HEIs and enables underlying knowledge generation and dissemination processes. Using accountability indicators, teachers can self-assess their performance and adapt to evolving needs of students, businesses, and societal stakeholders. The relationships among accountability indicators can be used by policymakers to steer the HEIs.

Purpose – As universities and colleges face an increasingly global environment, internationalization is viewed as a critical aspect of education, a fact that has significant academic and economic implications for higher educational institutions worldwide which need to be current with cultural education to adapt to change. Learning from other cultures is essential and valuable for students to connect with other cultures even as they enrich their own lives. Practical processes for developing successful cross-cultural education programs merit serious attention from higher educational institutions. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The case study explored in this paper demonstrates a practical application of internationalization of music education by examining the experience and outcomes from a cross-cultural program jointly developed by a US and a Korean university. The success of the case study under review hinged on three critical factors for developing a cross-cultural program between international academic partners: organizational commitment, teamwork, and pedagogical content. Findings – The findings support the assertion that the three key factors introduced in the framework can be applied to develop a cross-cultural program between international academic partners. Originality/value – This study proposes a practical framework for developing cross-cultural education programs among higher educational institutions.
