The responses of 268 Hong Kong and 399 Nigerian first- or second-year social science undergraduate university students to the Personal and Academic Self-Concept Inventory (PASCI; Fleming & Whalen, 1990) were compared to previously reported findings with similar groups of American and Nepalese students. Country × Gender analyses indicated clear, statistically significant mnain and interaction effects which varied according to the area of self-esteem under investigation. Support was found for the tendency found in research with secondary school students for subjects from non-Western cultures to report higher academic but lower nonacademic self-esteem than their Western peers. However, the gender differences did not generalize across cultures.

AbstractThe article focuses on the value “health”, as a component of the value orientation of students of lower secondary schools and upper secondary schools in our country. At the same time, it focuses on the presentation and interpretation of the results of a research conducted on a sample of students of selected schools, which was a part of a more comprehensive research on subjective understanding and individual interpretation of selected life values of lower secondary and upper secondary school students in Slovakia.

The literacy proficiency development is one of concerns in education generally, so is in mathematics education as well. The growth of literacy proficiency is one of the issues in education, because it is very important to problem solving skills in students' real life. This research aimed to describe the growth of lower secondary school and upper secondary school students’ mathematical literacy proficiency in Yogyakarta Special Region province, Indonesia. Three mathematical literacy proficiency aspects were examined in the research, namely content, process and context. It was an exploratory descriptive research with cross-sectional type research design. The population was 1,001 lower secondary school and upper-secondary school students ranging between 13 and 16 years old. They were selected using the combination of stratified and the cluster random sampling technique. A test consisting of 30 items, was adopted from the existing PISA test items used to collect the data in the research. The main data analysis was conducted by estimating students’ ability through the item-response theory approach. The results showed that the mathematical literacy proficiency of the students based on content, context, and process was still low. In the content and context domain, there was progress from 8th grade to 9th, from 9th grade to 10th grade. In the process domain, the development of students' abilities on formulate showed relatively the same results for 8th, 9th, and 10th were around 500, and in the employ and interpret process domain, there was a development of abilities from 8th to 9th, and from 9th to 10th grade. Keywords: mathematics literacy proficiency development, domains based on PISA study.

Mathematical education is part of the system of continuing education and is of great importance in ensuring the development of human intellectual abilities in modern society. In the secondary education system, teaching mathematics takes a special place in the development of cognitive abilities and logical thinking of students. The main goal of our study is to develop methodological foundations for teaching word problems in the process of teaching mathematics in secondary school and to test its effectiveness experimentally. There are various methods for solving word problems: arithmetic method, algebraic method, geometric method, logical method, practical method, and tabular method. Different mathematical models are created based on each method. In the course of secondary school mathematics, two methods of solving word problems are considered: arithmetic and algebraic. The main purpose of the conducted pedagogical experiment was to test the effectiveness of the method that allows to increase the level of mathematical training of secondary school students, based on the use of the algebraic method in solving word problems of secondary school students. Prospects for research on the development of teaching methods for solving word problems are associated with a deep consideration of professional, creative and personal aspects of students. Keywords:  teaching to solve word problems, word problem, structure of word problem, algebraic method.

This study aims to identify the levels of Epistemic Cognitive Beliefs (ECB) and the behaviour of Academic Help Seeking (AHS) among secondary school students in Jordan and detect the ability of ECB to predict AHS behaviour. It also aims to identify differences in the levels of ECB due to the variables of gender, academic branch and the interaction between gender and academic branch. The sample of the study consisted of 330 students who were in their second year of secondary school. To achieve the aims of the study, the ECB scale (Wang et al., 2013) and the AHS scale (White, 2011) were used. The results indicated that the levels of both ECB and AHS were high among secondary school students in Jordan. There were statistically significant differences in the levels of ECB due to the gender of the students, which favoured males, and due to academic branch, which favoured the sciences. Finally, there were no statistically significant differences in the levels of ECB due to the interaction between gender and academic branch. Furthermore, ECB contributed to the explanation of 34.9% of the AHS behaviour.

The study aimed to build a suggested strategy in light of Connectivism theory to develop the components of excellence in mathematics, and measure its effect on developing achievement and attitude among secondary school students. The study depended on the experimental design, two groups (pre-post); also the sample was selected randomly among first grade students in secondary school. The unit quadrilaterals have prepared in using proposed strategy. The instrument of study included: questionnaire of components of excellence in mathematics, achievement test, and questionnaire of attitude. The main findings were there are significant differences between the average grades of the experimental and controlling group in post application of questionnaire of excellence, achievement test and attitude questionnaire in favor of the experimental group students. In light of the results, the recommendations were including: applying connectivism theory in teaching mathematics to develop components of excellence in mathematics. All of these points have supported developing achievement and attitude toward mathematics.
