Use of anaerobic hydrolysis pretreatment to enhance ultrasonic disintegration of excess sludge

To improve the excess sludge disintegration efficiency, reduce the sludge disintegration cost, and increase sludge biodegradability, a combined pretreatment of anaerobic hydrolysis (AH) and ultrasonic treatment (UT) was proposed for excess sludge. Results showed that AH had an advantage in dissolving flocs, modifying sludge characteristics, and reducing the difficulty of sludge disintegration, whereas UT was advantageous in damaging cell walls, releasing intracellular substances, and decomposing macromolecular material. The combined AH–UT process was an efficient method for excess sludge pretreatment. The optimized solution involved AH for 3 days, followed by UT for 10 min. After treatment, chemical oxygen demand, protein, and peptidoglycan concentrations reached 3,949.5 mg O2/L, 752.5 mg/L and 619.1 mg/L, respectively. This work has great significance for further engineering applications, namely, reducing energy consumption, increasing the sludge disintegration rate, and improving the biochemical properties of sludge.

This article focuses on the effects of pretreatment on sewage sludge with sodium hypochlorite addition. The solubilization of organic matters of sludge was investigated. It was found that the pypocholoride treatment provided a efficient process to release organics from sludge flocs. When the ClO-dose was about 21mg /g SS with a reaction time of 3 hours, the supernatant soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), protein and polysaccharide increased by 400%, 67%, 1791%, 635%, 214%, and 556%, respectively. After hypochlorite pretreatment, the sludge extracelluar polymers (EPS) were disintegrated and the cell walls were broken. Then the intracellular organic matters were released into the supernatant, leading to the increase of organic matters in the supernatant.

Reduction of energy consumption in the affordable housing sector is highly impacted by human behavior. However, only limited behavior change research exists that is aimed at reducing energy consumption in this sector. This study seeks to implement the first two phases of the community-based social marketing (CBSM) framework in an affordable housing setting. The goals of the research are to identify the optimal behaviors for energy reduction and to identify the perceived barriers and benefits associated with those behaviors in a low-income housing facility. The results of this study identify five target behaviors along with their barriers and benefits. In addition, the study identifies potential issues and nuances in the CBSM process that researchers should take into consideration during future implementations of CBSM in affordable housing environments.
