AbstractThe detection conditions and features of direct and scattered neutron wave interference are studied on magnetized Co_67Fe_31V_2 alloy slabs. The angular intensity distributions of neutrons passed through a sample are measured for the opposite polarization directions of the initial neutron beam. The sought-for effect that is induced by the magnetic scattering on crystal structure irregularities in specimens manifest itself by different areas of peaks “without neutron spin flip.” The ratio of these areas depends on the thermal treatment mode, sample thickness and strength of the magnetic field applied to the sample. The peaks “with neutron spin flip” are due to the mechanism of neutron wave passage through magnetononcollinear boundaries. The methods for experimental data acquisition and processing are reported as well.

The spin-flip probability S(θ) in the inelastic scattering of unpolarized 15.0-MeV neutrons to the first 2+ state in 12C has been determined at θ = 140° (lab.) by measuring the scattered neutrons in coincidence with the subsequent 4.44- MeV deexcitation γ-rays emitted normal to the scattering plane. Time-of-flight technique with carbon recoil detection in a plastic scintillator has been used. The neutron spin-flip probability is S = 0.21±0.06.

We investigated the structure, magnetic and magnetoresistive properties of antiferromagnetically coupled [Fe(85Å)/Cr(tCr)]12 superlattices with the Cr layers thickness tCr = 12.4 and 13.6 Å, grown simultaneously on (100)MgO and (211)MgO substrates. It is shown that the (211)MgO substrate is appropriate for the growth of (210)Fe/Cr multilayers with a strong uniaxial in-plane anisotropy. The stepwise behavior of magnetization and magnetoresistance is revealed in the case when the magnetic field is applied along the easy axis in a film plane of (211)MgO/[(210)Fe/Cr]12 superlattices. The steps on M(H) and ΔR(H)/R dependences are caused by the flip of the magnetic moments of individual Fe layers. The qualitative information about the sequence of spin-flip transitions is extracted from the comparative analysis of magnetization and magnetoresistance data.

The interaction potentials and their spatial Fourer transforms are derived for nuclear and magnetic scattering, as well as for interactions with atomic electric fields. For the nuclear interaction, the Fermi pseudopotential is introduced and the scattering length operator is defined. The neutron spin dependence of the nuclear and magnetic interaction is calculated, and general expressions for spin-dependent scattering are obtained. The longitudinal and XYZ polarization analysis methods are described, and the technique of spherical neutron polarimetry is explained. The Blume-Maleev equation which gives the final neutron polarization for an arbitrary incident polarization are derived.
