The objective of the present work was to study the cerebral ventricles and its associated parts of brain of Surti buffalo (n=12), The cerebral ventricles included two lateral ventricles and third ventricle. The lateral ventricles were curved cavities presented large central part and three horns within the cerebral hemispheres. The third ventricle was an annular space on the periphery of inter-thalamic adhesion between two thalami. The mean length and width of central part of lateral ventricle were 4.78±0.07 and 1.49±0.07 cm, respectively. The septum pellucidum was thin translucent membrane of two laminae which separates two lateral ventricles. The mean values of length and height of septum pellucidum were 3.6±0.12 and 0.52±0.04 cm, respectively. The cavum septum pellucidum was a small space found between two laminae of septum pellucidum.

The gross morphology of the heart of mature Philippine water buffalo was described by determining the weight, length, width and circumference; measured the average external circumference of the pulmonary veins and artery, cranial and caudal vena cava and the aorta; determined the presence and location of ligamentum arteriosum; measured the thickness of the atrial and ventricular wall; described the components of the left and right atrioventricular valves, pulmonary valves and the aortic valves; determined the location and measured the length of trabeculae septomarginalis and determined the location of the os cordis. Hearts of ten mature Philippine water buffalo of both sexes were collected from abattoirs of Cabanatuan City. The absolute and relative weights of the heart were measured using digital weighing scale. Different dimensions like circumferences, length, and width of the heart; the external circumferences of major blood vessels; and the thickness of the wall of heart were determined using measuring tape and Vernier caliper. The number of cusps present in the left and right atrioventricular, pulmonary, and aortic valves was counted and the presence of ligamentum arteriosum was documented. Radiograph was used to determine the presence and location of os cordis. All of the hearts studied were pointed and bilaterally flattened. The base of the heart is markedly surrounded with fatty tissues. The mean absolute weight is 2.42 kg. The heart has a mean dimension of 21.71 cm x 17.49 cm. The mean circumference at the level of the coronary groove, middle and apex were 48.41 cm, 44.10 cm and 20.57 cm, respectively. An average of four pulmonary veins was documented to be present. The right ventricle has a constant three papillary muscles and three cusps while the left ventricle has a constant two papillary muscles and two cusps. The number of cusps of both pulmonary valve and aortic valve was three. Ligamentum arteriosum was present in all samples and it is located between the pulmonary trunk and aorta. The os cordis which is located at the aortic fibrous ring is present in all heart of Philippine water buffalo examined.

Cavum veli interpositi is an open CSF space in the roof of the third ventricle that surrounds the internal cerebral veins, and is a forward extension of the quadrigeminal plate cistern. To the best of our knowledge, spontaneous resolution of a cavum veli interpositi has not been reported in the literature to date. Interestingly, case reports of spontaneous resolution of cystic cavum septum pellucidum in three patients and eighteen arachnoid cyst cases has been described in the literature. We describe the spontaneous resolution of a cavum veli interpositi or cyst in cavum veli interpositi in a 35-year-old man and review the literature of spontaneous resolution of cavum septum pellucidum and arachnoid cysts.

Abstract BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE Cavum septum pellucidum (CSP) and cavum vergae (CV) cysts are common incidental findings on imaging studies. However, they may rarely present with symptoms related to the obstruction of the foramen of Monro by the cyst leaflets. There is no consensus regarding the management of symptomatic CSP and CV cysts. We present an original transcavum interforniceal endoscopic fenestration technique. The step-by-step surgical procedure and two illustrative cases are presented. CLINICAL PRESENTATION A 31-yr-old male and a 24-yr-old woman presented with symptomatic CSP and CV cysts. For both patients, neuronavigation was used to plan the procedure. An endoscope was introduced into the cyst through a right frontal burr-hole. After an examination of the endoscopic anatomy, a communication between the cyst and the third ventricle was performed using an endoscopic forceps. In both cases, directly after the fenestration, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) passed through the communication, and the collapse of the cyst was appreciated. Symptoms were relieved in both patients, and neuropsychological assessment improved. Postoperative imaging showed a reduction in the cyst bulge, and patent foramen of Monro. CONCLUSION Endoscopic fenestration of CSP and CV cysts to the third ventricle through an interforniceal navigated approach is a feasible and efficient surgical procedure. Theoretical advantages include a single tract through noneloquent brain, a perpendicular trajectory to the membrane for fenestration, and a large CSF space beyond the fenestration point.

OBJECTIVES: to propose standardisation of fourth ventricle dimensions and to study its characteristics in neurocysticercosis. METHOD: a control group (CG) constituted by 114 individuals with normal CT, and 80 patients with neurocysticercosis composed the group with neurocysticercosis (GN). Measures of the inner cranial diameter (Cr), fronto-polar distance between both lateral ventricles (FP), antero-posterior (AP) and latero-lateral (LL) fourth ventricle width based the standardisation of six indexes. RESULTS: AP/Cr, AP/LL and AP/FP were the more discriminative indexes, presenting in CG the mean values of 0.063, 0.267 and 0.582, respectively. The indexes in GN had values statistically higher than in CG. From GN, 51patients had increased indexes values above 2 standard deviation of the CG mean. AP/Ll was > or = 1 in 95% of patients with ventricular shunting and in 88% with depression. It also occurred in 73% patients with satisfactory follow-up and in everybody who died. CONCLUSION: AP/Cr, AP/LL and AP/FP may represent fourth ventricle dimensions.

AbstractColloid cysts (CC) occur predominantly in the midline with majority involving roof of the third ventricle. In cases of cavum septum pellucidum (CSP), the surgeon can lose orientation when normal intraventricular structures are not encountered during surgery. We report a patient with CSP, who underwent right frontal parasagittal craniotomy, interhemispheric, transcallosal approach to reach the lesion. Lesion may not be seen in its usual location of foramen of Monroe, and entering the cavum may be confusing because no intraventricular landmarks will be seen. Excision of the cyst through the cavum usually requires interfornicial approach, and this structure must be separated gently to avoid injury.

Corpus callosotomy offers useful palliation for selected patients with medically intractable seizures, particularly those with uncontrolled and disabling drop attacks. Here the authors present their technique for performing a corpus callosotomy that allows for complete sectioning of the callosum while avoiding entry into the lateral ventricles. The anatomical basis for the technique is the presence of a definable cleft just ventral to the corpus callosum in the midline, formed by the fusion of the two laminae of the septum pellucidum. This small cleft is typically present even in the absence of a cavum septum pellucidum on MR imaging. The authors have found that dividing the body of the corpus callosum by exploiting the cleft of the septum pellucidum in the absolute midline is a simple and expeditious way to perform a callosotomy without entering the lateral ventricles.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine age-related changes of the cerebral ventricles of healthy non-brachycephalic domestic cats by the acquisition of brain MRI images of 12 adult (1 to 6 years), 11 mature (7 to11 years) and 10 geriatric (12 years or more) cats. Our hypothesis is that the cerebral ventricular system of cats expands with increasing age. The possibility of the evidence of the olfactory bulb cavities and temporal horns of the lateral ventricles were evaluated in this study. Volumes of the olfactory bulb cavities, lateral ventricles (including the temporal horns), third ventricle, mesencephalic aqueduct and fourth ventricle were measured and corrected for the intracranial volume. Significant differences were found between the adult and mature groups in relation to the geriatric one for the variable related to the evidence of the temporal ventricular horns, which were most frequently visualized in geriatric cats. Percentage of the right lateral and third ventricles volume by intracranial volume were significantly higher in geriatric cats compared to the adults. The results of this study demonstrate that ventricular dilation tends to occur with advancing age in cats, as well as the increase in the frequency of the temporal ventricular horn evidence, as had been indicated in the hypothesis of the study.
