Social Media Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Associations with Social and Emotional Wellbeing (Preprint)

BACKGROUND Social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced the frequency of in-person social interactions. College students were highly impacted since many universities transferred curriculum from in-person to entirely online, physically separating students with little notice. With social distancing, college students’ use of social media likely fundamentally changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, possibly holding implications for wellbeing. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to determine how (a) components of social media use (weekly frequency, time per day, habitual use, engagement, enjoyment, addiction, mood impact) changed from before to during COVID-19; (b) these changes in social media use were associated with pandemic-related social and emotional wellbeing; and (c) social media use and changes in use during the pandemic were associated with loneliness among college students. METHODS Participants (N = 176) were surveyed during the time their university campus was operating online. Participants completed the same social media use questionnaires twice, once with regard to the month preceding the onset of COVID-19, and again with regard to the month since this time. They also reported the extent to which they experienced perceived change in social support resulting from the pandemic, pandemic-related stress, and loneliness. RESULTS We found that, after the onset of COVID-19, participants showed an increase in daily time spent on social media, t(169) = 5.53, d = 0.42, p < .001, habitual use, t(173) = 3.60, d = 0.27, p < .001, and addiction, t(173) = 4.96, d = 0.38, p < .001; further, enjoyment on social media decreased, t(173) = -2.10, d = -0.16, p = .04; and the mood impact of social media activities became more negative, t(172) = -3.76, d = -0.29, p < .001. Increased perceived social support during COVID was associated with changes in frequency of social media use, time per day, addiction, and engagement (rs > .18). Pandemic-related stress was associated with changes in social media addiction and the extent to which one’s social media content was related to the pandemic (rs > .20). Loneliness was positively associated with social media addiction (r = .26) and negatively associated with social media engagement (r = -.19) during the pandemic. Loneliness was also negatively associated with changes in habit and engagement (rs < -.15). CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that components of social media use are associated with both positive and negative pandemic-related social outcomes, but largely negative pandemic-related emotional outcomes. Further, some components of social media use are positively associated with loneliness (e.g., addiction) while others show a negative association (e.g., engagement). These findings provide a more nuanced picture of how social media use is associated with social and emotional wellbeing during the time of a global health crisis when in-person interactions are scarce.

Many college students experience the death of someone close to them and could be at risk for complicated grieving. Their primary sources of support may be unavailable as family members may live far away and their peers may be unprepared to respond to their grief. In addition, college students are exposed to a variety of stressors that could result in maladaptive coping. Furthermore, although most college-aged students use social media, little is known about its impact on grieving. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree to which social support, coping, continuing bonds, and social media use predicted complicated grief and posttraumatic growth in a sample of college students who had experienced an interpersonal loss. Participants (N = 258; 77.5% female, M age = 19.98, SD = 1.41) completed an online survey assessing the aforementioned constructs using Likert-type scales. Findings from two hierarchical regressions indicated that coping variables accounted for the greatest percentage of variance in grieving outcomes with avoidant-emotional coping being the most robust predictor of complicated grief and problem-focused coping accounting for considerable variance in posttraumatic growth (both were associated positively with the outcomes). As hypothesized, continuing bonds explained variance in both grieving outcomes with externalized continuing bonds and maintaining continuing bonds on social media predicting complicated grief and internalized continuing bonds contributing to posttraumatic growth (also all positively associated). Social support from family also was predictive of posttraumatic growth in the positive direction. Future research directions and implications for practice are discussed with the hope that this research might inform the development of interventions to assist college students who are grieving.

Social distancing rules during the COVID-19 pandemic changed social interaction for many and increased the risk of loneliness in the general population. Social media use has been ambiguously related to loneliness, and associations may differ by age. The study aimed to examine loneliness and its association with social media use within different age groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia during April/May 2020, and 3,810 participants aged 18 years or above were recruited. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between social media use and social and emotional loneliness within separate age groups. Emotional loneliness was higher among young adults and among those who used social media several times daily. Adjusting by sociodemographic variables, using more types of social media was associated with lower social loneliness among the oldest participants, and with higher emotional loneliness among the youngest participants. Among middle-aged participants, using social media more frequently was associated with lower social loneliness. We found that the associations between social media use and loneliness varied by age. Older people’s engagement on social media may be a resource to reduce loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic. We observed higher levels of loneliness among high-frequent social media users of younger age.

Many mothers can find themselves increasingly isolated and overwhelmed after giving birth to a new baby. This period can be a source of extreme stress, anxiety and depression, which can not only have an economic impact on national health services, but can also have long-term effects on the development of the child. At the same time, social media use among most new mothers has become ubiquitous. This research investigates the role of social media, potentially as a mechanism for social support, among Australian mothers of young children aged from birth to 4 years. The findings indicate that participants had mixed responses to their social media use. While social support was deemed a benefit, there were also some negative aspects to social media use identified. The findings highlight the need to critically interrogate social media’s ability to act as a source of social support for new mothers.
