UNSTRUCTURED Objective: This scoping review aimed to understand the extent and type of evidence in relation to physiopathology, classification, epidemiology, clinical management, and effect of therapy for hearing loss in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) IVA. Introduction: Mild to moderate hearing loss is common in patients with MPS IVA. The hearing loss can be conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. However, in these patients, the mixed form is frequent, attributed to the combination of conductive and neurosensory elements, with a slowly progressive evolution. Conductive hearing loss may be secondary to recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, serous otitis media, and deformity of the ear ossicles due to accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Meanwhile, the sensorineural form is mainly attributed to the accumulation of GAG in the auditory system.. Inclusion criteria: This scoping review include participants of both sexes, without specific age, who are diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidosis IVA and who develop hearing loss as a comorbidity. None exclusion criteria (country, language or document type) will be applicable. Methods: This scoping review includes participants of both sexes, without specific age, who are diagnosed with MPS IVA and develop hearing loss as comorbidity. No exclusion criteria (country, language, or document type) will be applicable. The information sources will include experimental and quasi-experimental, analytical observational, observational, and qualitative studies. Unpublished literature will not be covered. Gray literature will not be covered. Two independent reviewers will participate in the process of screening the literature, paper selection, and data extraction, and this process will be performed blindly. When all manuscripts have been selected by two reviewers, disagreements that arise between the reviewers at each stage of the selection process will be resolved through discussion or with an additional reviewer. Results will be reported with descriptive statistics and diagrammatic or tabular displayed information as explained in the JBI guidelines.

The association of a conspicuous nasal septal deviation with otomicroscopic, audiometric, and impedance findings was studied in 687 school children, aged 6–15 years. Changes in color and structure of pars tensa and the retraction of pars flaccida were indirectly associated with clinically significant septal deviation as a result of an increased incidence of upper respiratory tract infections, but no association was found between hearing loss and pathological impedance findings and clinically significant septal deviation.

To date, topical therapies guarantee a better delivery of high concentrations of pharmacologic agents to the mucosa of the upper airways (UA). Recently, topical administration of ectoine has just been recognized as adjuvant treatment in the Allergic Rhinitis (AR) and Rhinosinusitis (ARS). The aim of this work is to review the published literature regarding all the potential therapeutic effects of ectoine in the acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of UA. Pertinent studies published without temporal limitation were selected searching on MEDLINE the following terms: “ectoine” and “nasal spray,” “oral spray,” “upper respiratory tract infections,” “rhinosinusitis,” “rhinitis,” “rhinoconjunctivitis,” “pharyngitis,” and “laryngitis.” At the end of our selection process, six relevant publications were included: two studies about the effect of ectoine on AR, one study about ARS, one study about rhinitis sicca anterior, and two studies about acute pharyngitis and/or laryngitis. Due to its moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties, topical administration of ectoine could play a potential additional role in treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of UA, in particular in the management of sinonasal conditions improving symptoms and endoscopic findings. However, these results should be viewed cautiously as they are based on a limited number of studies; some of them were probably underpowered because of their small patient samples.

The etiology of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) has been unclear until now. Understanding its potential etiology is crucial for the development of preventive medicine. In this study, we investigated the association between acute upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) and SSNHL risk. We conducted a case-crossover study by using the longitudinal health insurance database derived from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Individual acute URI between the case and control periods was reviewed. Multivariable conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of SSNHL risk associated with acute URIs after adjustments for potential confounders. In total, 1131 patients with SSNHL between 2010 and 2013 fulfilled our inclusion criteria and were included. The aOR (95% confidence interval [CI]) for SSNHL was 1.57 (1.20–2.05) in relation to acute URIs one month before the index date. Moreover, the aORs (95% CIs) of the female and young to middle-aged (≤65 years) populations were 1.63 (1.13–2.36) and 1.76 (1.29–2.40), respectively. In addition, the association between SSNHL and acute URIs was decreased over time. The aOR for SSNHL was 1.25 (1.01–1.56) in relation to acute URIs three months before the index date. A cute URIs increase SSNHL risk and are a potential risk factor for SSNHL. The establishment of a feasible health policy for the prevention of acute URIs is crucial for SSNHL prevention, particularly in female, and young to middle-aged populations.
