BACKGROUND E-liquid is one of the main components in electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). ENDS review comments could serve as an early warning on use patterns, and even function to serve as an indicator of problems or adverse events pertaining to the use of specific e-liquids – much like the types of responses that are tracked by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding medications. OBJECTIVE This paper aims to understand users’ vaping experience using sentiment opinion summarization techniques, which can help characterize how consumers, ENDS vendors, and others think about specific e-liquids and their characteristic (e.g. flavor, throat hit, vapor production, etc.). METHODS We collected e-liquid reviews on JuiceDB from June 27, 2013 to December 31, 2017 by using its public application programming interface (API). The dataset contains 27070 reviews for 8058 e-liquid products. Each review is accompanied by an overall rating and a set of four aspect ratings of an e-liquid, each on a scale of 1-5: flavor accuracy, throat hit, value and cloud production. An Iterative Dichotomiser 3 (ID3) based influential aspect analysis model was adopted to learn the key elements that impact e-liquid use. Then, fine-grained sentiment analysis was employed to mine opinions on various aspects of the vaping experience related to e-liquids. RESULTS We found that: (1) Flavor accuracy and value were the two most important aspects that influence users’ sentiments towards e-liquids. (2) 67.83% (18362/27070) of the reviews in JuiceDB were positive, while 12.67% (3430/27070) were negative. This indicates that users generally hold positive attitudes towards e-liquids. (3) Among the nine flavors, fruity and sweet were the two most popular flavors. (4) Great and sweet tastes, reasonable value, and strong throat hit made users satisfied with the fruity and sweet flavors, whereas weird tastes made users dislike these flavors. Meanwhile, users complained about steep/expensive price, bad quality and harsh throat hit of some e-liquids. (5) There were 2342 fruity e-liquids and 2049 sweet e-liquids. Positive sentiments towards fruity e-liquids and sweet e-liquids measured 55.81% and 59.83% respectively; negative sentiments were 13.62% and 12.88% respectively. Great flavors and good vapors contributed to positive reviews of fruity and sweet products. However, bad tastes such as “sour” or “bitter” resulted in negative reviews. These findings can help businesses and policy makers further improve product quality and formulate effective policy. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to provide an effective mechanism to analyze users’ ENDS vaping experience based on sentiment opinion summarization techniques. Sentiment opinions on aspect and products can be found using our method, which is of great importance to monitor e-liquid products and improve work efficiency.

ObjectivesAn increasing number of US states have required a tax on electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) in the past few years. This study evaluated the effect of statewide vaping product excise tax policy on ENDS use among young adults.MethodsWe used the two recent waves (2014–2019) of the Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey. A total of 17 896 US young adults were analysed. Difference-in-differences approach along with weighted multilevel logistic regressions were used to evaluate the association of vaping product excise tax policy adoption with current ENDS use, accounting for the clustering of respondents within the same states.ResultsThere was an increase in current ENDS use prevalence from 2014–2015 (3.4%) to 2018–2019 (5.4%). The presence of a tax on ENDS products was significantly associated with reduced current ENDS use (adjusted OR (AOR)=0.64, 95% CI=0.43 to 0.95). Importantly, respondents living in states with the policy showed significantly lower increase in ENDS use prevalence during the study period (interaction between within-state changes and between-state differences: AOR=0.57, 95% CI=0.35 to 0.91), controlling for other state-level policies and sociodemographic characteristics.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that adopting a vaping product excise tax policy may help reduce ENDS use and suppress the increase of ENDS use prevalence among young adults. Considering that there are still a number of US states that have not implemented vaping product excise tax policy, wider adoption of such policy across the nation would likely help mitigate ENDS use prevalence.

The features of collecting aerosol of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) of various types on a laboratory machine smoking of linear type are investigated. For research, three brands of ENDS were taken: single-use Luxlite of non-collapsible closed-type design; Von Erl My refillable closed-type with liquid in replaceable cartridges; Ego Aio refillable open-type with a tank for self-filling. An exhaustive collection of aerosol was carried out on a laboratory Smoking machine of linear type according to ISO 20768:2018 in 2 modes: standard ISO and experimental ISOEXP with an extended duration of puffing. It was found that an aerosol can be collected per one filter for ENDS: Luxlite and Von Erl My from 50 puffs, Ego Aio – 40 puffs. An exhaustive collecting of aerosol for ENDS was determined, the number of puffs: Luxlite 250–300, Von Erl My 300–350, Ego Aio 160–200. For ENDS Luxlite under the collecting of aerosol according to ISO and ISOEXP, the loss mass of liquid was 2,7 and 4,8%, respectively. The mass loss of the Von Erl My/Ego Aio liquid in ISO and ISOEXP modes was, %: the 1st cycle – 6,9/7,5 and 10,0/12,6; the 2nd cycle – 7,9/30,7 and 8,1/49,2; the 3rd cycle – 8,7/24,3 and 12,1/6,1; the 4th cycle – 11,6/44,5 and 10,1/22,7, respectively. The stable operation of Luxlite devices and unstable operation of Von Erl My and Ego Aio devices with liquid leaks and aerosol losses were noted. It is established that the increase in the duration of puff under the regime ISOEXP leads to increased production of aerosol performance degradation ENDS and increase weight loss liquid for ENDS. The development of a method for collecting aerosol of ENDS, taking into account the characteristics of consumption and their design, will allow an objective assessment of the component composition of aerosol of ENDS.
