Abstract An isopropanolic extract of serum can be made suitable for the simultaneous estimation of cholesterol and triglycerides by passing it through a commercially-available chromatographic column containing activated metallic oxides in which alumina predominates. No centrifugation step nor phase separation is required. Use of the purified extract allows existing methods to be simplified and shortened without loss of reproducibility or stability. Results compare well with those obtained by traditional methods.

Abstract 1. The Schwartzenbach method has been adapted for the simultaneous determination of calcium and magnesium in serum and spinal fluid. The method appears to be adaptable to all body fluids, including thoracic and abdominal transudates and exudates. Its use in the clinical laboratory is recommended because of the great saving of time, particularly in the determination of magnesium. 2. A series of 100 pathologic cases of various clinical entities has been analyzed by the new method and checked with the standard methods. A calculation and statistical analysis has revealed the Mg/Ca molar ratio to be of possible clinical significance.

ABSTRACTThe simultaneous determination of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and gamma interferon (IFN-γ) in QuantiFERON-TB test plasma supernatants permitted the detection of shifts inMycobacterium tuberculosis-specific T-cell signatures. A subset of the 84 subjects tested revealed a significantly elevated IL-2/IFN-γ ratio, which may be a marker for the successful elimination ofM. tuberculosisinfection.

In contrast to the adjustment of single plates a block adjustment is a simultaneous determination of all unknowns associated with many overlapping plates (star positions and plate constants etc. ) by one large adjustment. This plate overlap technique was introduced by Eichhorn and reviewed by Googe et. al. The author now has developed a set of computer programmes which allows the adjustment of any set of contemporaneous overlapping plates. There is in principle no limit for the number of plates, the number of stars, the number of individual plate constants for each plate, and for the overlapping factor.
