Compact Covered Distribution Lines Supported by Triangle Spacers: Configuration and Benefits

Adopting covered conductors and compact configuration has become the tendency in the renovation of distribution network in China. Advantages of compact configuration are discussed in this paper, which can further save the passage of distribution line, and can easily realize multiple lines in a pole. The movement process of phase conductors is analyzed by the Chord Forced Equation of the mechanical theory to obtain the relationship between the phase spacing of triangle spacer and the span between two neighboring spacers. The suitable phase spacing and spacer span are presented for polymeric and composite spacers. The superiority of compact configuration against lightning protection comparing with traditional distribution lines was analyzed.

Since distribution lines have relatively weak insulation compared to power transmission lines, it is more liable to lightning damages. This paper reports a study of how overhead ground wire height and impulse ground resistance affect the lightning protection performance. The results obtained in this paper show that high overhead ground wire worsen the lightning protection performance while reducing the impulse ground resistance improves the lightning protection performance. Therefore, it is recommended to set the overhead ground wire lower and take necessary measures to reduce impulse ground resistance. The results obtained also confirm the crucial role of the overhead ground wire as a protection of distribution lines.

Surge arrester is an effective measure to protect distribution lines from lightning strikes. But high costs will be spent on the maintenance of a great many surge arresters in 10kV distribution line. Taking the relationship between reliability and economical efficiency into consideration, aiming at installation density of surge arrester, this paper established the effective simulation models of direct lightning stroke overvoltage and induced overvoltage by ATP-EMTP. Finally, this paper presented the optimal installation scheme of surge arrester on the basis of the simulation and analysis of the lightning withstand level. The simulation results provide references for the optimal installation scheme of surge arrester on the distribution network.

The importance and necessity of the domestic and international distribution lightning direction and governance of the distribution line lightning damage are described, and the distribution line lightning protection assessment methods and procedures and how to choose the arrester combined with the actual situation are discussed. The lightning location system and counter combination is a means to test the merits of lightning protection components are deep-seated argued, and it will be an important part of future governance lightning disturbance of distribution lines. To prevent induction lightning damages is the main direction for distribution system is clarified through lightning damages prevention of 10kV Langshi line.

Covered conductors and compact configuration with triangle spacers for 10-kV distribution lines have brought many advantages and benefits in China. In the past, the polymeric spacers cast with polycarbonate material had been designed and applied to make the distribution line compact. The reason that breakage faults occurred on compact distribution lines with polymeric spacer is because the polymeric spacers have bad pollution flashover performance, and the polycarbonate material used is not suitable for outdoor insulation. The pollution experiment of the covered distribution line supported by triangle spacers shows the flaw in the insulation layer is the key reason to generate flashover in a humid environment, which would be formed in the insulation layer of the covered conductor under sun radiation or under lightning effect. A new kind of triangle composite spacer, which is suitable for heavy pollution area, is designed to prevent breakage faults of covered conductors caused by leakage current. From the experimental results, the corona initial voltage and the flashover voltage of 10-kV covered distribution line fixed with composite spacers increased an average of 41.9% and 60.3%, respectively, comparing with the tested data of covered conductor fixed with polymeric spacers. The developed composite spacers can highly improve the pollution performance of 10-kV covered distribution lines. The field applications show the composite spacers are effective, and can prevent conductor breakage faults caused by leakage current.

Randomly installed distributed generators (DGs) in households may cause unbalanced line current in a distribution network. This research presents a battery energy system for balancing of line current in a distribution network involving multi units of single phase photovoltaic (PV) distributed generators (DGs). In this paper, the PV generators were simulated consisting of a buck-boost DC/DC converter and single phase DC/AC inverter. It was connected to the distribution line through the low voltage 220 volt 50 Hz. The proposed phase balancing system uses battery energy storage and three single phase bidirectional inverters. The inverter is capable of injecting current or absorbing power from the line to the battery. This inverter operation is arranged to balance each distribution line separately, as well as to improve other power quality parameters, such as voltage and current harmonics. Simulation results show that the system was capable of improving the unbalanced line current from 15.59 % to 11, 48 % and unbalanced line voltage from 1.76 % to 0.58 %. The system was able for increasing current harmonics from 0.98 % to 1.03% and voltage harmonics from 38.96% to 39.08%.
