Nowadays, renewable energy systems such as wind turbine generators and photovoltaic systems are introduced to power systems. However, the renewable energy system is influenced by weather conditions, and the generated power of the renewable energy system is deviated. For the provision of deviated power, the battery energy storage system is introduced to suppress the deviation of the frequency and voltage in power system. However, it needs the large capacity of a battery system, which increases the capital cost. In this paper, we propose a coordinated control strategy between the diesel generator and the battery system to reduce the capital cost of battery, inverter capacity and storage capacity. The proposed control system incorporates the H-infinity control theory, which enables intuitive controller design in frequency domain. Effectiveness of the proposed control system is validated by simulation results.

Many developing countries suffer from high energy-import dependency and inadequate electrification of rural areas, which aggravates the poverty problem. In this work, Al-Tafilah in Jordan was considered as a case study, where the technical, economic, and environmental benefits of a decentralized hybrid renewable energy system that can match 100% of the city demand were investigated. A tri-hybrid system of wind, solar, and hydropower was integrated with an energy storage system and optimized to maximize the match between the energy demand and production profiles. The optimization aimed at maximizing the renewable energy system (RES) fraction while keeping the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) equal to the electricity purchase tariff. The techno-economic analysis showed that the optimal system in Al-Tafilah comprises a 28 MW wind system, 75.4 MW PV, and 1 MW hydropower, with a 259 MWh energy storage system, for which a RES fraction of 99% can be achieved, and 47,160 MtCO2 are avoided yearly. This study can be easily extended to other rural cities in Jordan, as they have higher renewable energy system (RES) potential. The presented findings are essential not only for Jordan’s planning and economy-boosting but also for contributing to the ongoing force against climate change.

Energy storage system (ESS) plays a prominent role in renewable energy (RE) to overcome the intermittent of RE energy condition and improve energy utilization in the power system. However, ESS for residential applications requires specific and different configuration. Hence, this review paper aims to provide information for system builders to decide the best setup configuration of ESS for residential application. In this paper, the aim is to provide an insight into the critical elements of the energy storage technology for residential application. The update on ESS technology, battery chemistry, battery charging, and monitoring system and power inverter technology are reviewed. Then, the operation, the pro, and cons of each variant of these technologies are comprehensively studied. This paper suggested that the ESS for residential ESS requires NMC battery chemistry because it delivers an all-rounded performance as compared to other battery chemistries. The four-stages constant current (FCC) charging technique is recommended because of the fast charging capability and safer than other charging techniques reviewed. Next, the battery management system (BMS) is recommended to adapt in advance machine learning method to estimate the state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH) and internal temperature (IT) to increase the safety and prolong the lifespan of the batteries. Finally, these recommendations and solutions aimed to improve the utilization of RE energy in power system, especially in residential ESS application and offer the best option that is available on the shelf for the residential ESS application in the future.

Sun provides abundant source of renewable energy that can be integrated with the electrical grid. Climate change issues have compelled policy makers to look into various ways to reduce carbon footprint and use green, renewable energy. Solar power, along with other alternative sources for energy, is quite popular these days. Talking about Solar, the primary disadvantage of solar power is that it obviously cannot be created during the night and power generated is also reduced during times of cloud cover. Energy Storage is a flexible asset that provides unprecedented flexibility in grid optimization. Cost effective solar energy storage methods are urgently needed due to the increased demand for solar power and due to its variability. But in today’s scenario, energy storage systems are not commercially economic for all customers, and that to more work needs to be done by industry, government, and regulators to support the continuing cost reductions. It is expected that the Energy Storage costs would slide to 41% by 2020.The value that solar and storage can together add to the energy system is leading to a more efficient, cleaner, and more secure future. However, solar energy storage becomes critical when unsteady sources of energy provide. Thus, affordable energy storage system along with the cheaper Solar energy would be lethal combination making an ultimate Game Changer for the Power Industry and Sustainability.
