Ectopic thyroid is the result of the failure of migration of thyroid along its tract from the floor of the primitive foregut to its final pretracheal position. The incidence of an ectopic lesion in adults is 7%. Most common location is the base of tongue (lingual). Other diverse sites are larynx, trachea, mediastinum, and pericardium. These ectopic tissues may develop the same diseases as the thyroid gland. Here, we report a case of a young female presenting with a foreign body sensation in the throat and on examination revealed a smooth submucosal swelling involving the supraglottis. The entire cyst was excised in toto by KTP 532 laser via an endolaryngeal approach and it was reported as papillary carcinoma of the thyroid. Literature search reported only a few cases of intralaryngeal ectopic thyroid and none with a papillary carcinoma of the larynx. This is the first reported case of papillary carcinoma of thyroid in the larynx.

AbstractObjective:To review the diagnosis of primary papillary carcinoma of ectopic thyroid tissue within branchial cleft cysts, and to discuss the diagnostic challenge of differentiating this condition from metastatic disease when an occult microcarcinoma is found in the thyroid gland. Methods:These comprise a case report and a literature review. We present the case of a 75-year-old woman with papillary thyroid carcinoma within the wall of a recurrent, 15 cm, lateral neck cyst. Results:Histological examination of the patient's thyroid gland found a 0.5 mm papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. Conclusion:Our differential diagnosis was primary papillary carcinoma arising from ectopic thyroid tissue, or metastatic cystic degeneration of a lateral lymph node. We make an argument for the former.

A 69-year-old woman with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the tongue base came under our observation complaining of repeated episodes of haemoptysis. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tongue base gives rise to a rather vague and aspecific symptomatology. Early symptoms include foreign body sensation in the oral cavity, undefined paraesthesia, and sialorrhoea. With the progression of disease, dysphagia, otalgia, and painful swallowing are usually referred. We report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tongue base mimicking an ectopic thyroid.

ABSTRACT Hamartomas of larynx are rare benign lesions which can be a rare cause for respiratory obstruction. This report highlights the case of a young female who presented with foreign body sensation and worm-like mass in throat of 10 years duration. On videolaryngoscopy, a pinkish polypoidal worm like mass was seen arising from the right side of epiglottis on the laryngeal surface. Endoscopic guided excision with cautery was done and the mass revealed hamartoma on histopathology. How to cite this article Reddy SL, Kadapa N. Worm in the Throat: Hamartoma Larynx. Abstract Topical anesthetic eye drops are used extensively for ophthalmic examinations but self-treatment and non-technical removal of foreign bodies using tetracaine drops can be hazardous. The present study intended to determine the inadmissible uses of anesthetic tetracaine eye drops, manner of drug obtaining and likelihood of the ocular complications in the patients. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 162 patients with ocular pain and foreign body sensation, red eye or lid edema admitted to the Eye clinic in Sabzevar, Iran. Variables included age, sex, chief compliant, job, site of foreign bodies, diagnosis of problem, use of tetracaine drops, drug provision, times patients referred to the eye clinic, and kinds of treatment. The most common chief complaint for admission to the Eye clinic was lacrimation (55.6%), followed by ocular pain, and foreign body sensation (35.8%). Some patients (30.9%) (mostly welders) inadmissibly used topical tetracaine eye drops; 21.6% of cases obtained tetracaine eye drops from drugstores without doctor’s prescription, and only 3.7% provided drugs by prescription. Corneal site (81.5%) was the most common location of foreign body; metallic foreign body (63%) was the most common. One patient was admitted in hospital for management. Topical inadmissible tetracaine (0.5%) is commonly used by welders, who obtain it from drugstores without prescriptions due to its simple usage and short acting pain relief. Supervision is required over drugstores for denying it if demanded without a prescription. Enhancing clients’ awareness is also suggested.

Fish bone ingestion is a common encounter in otorhinolaryngology setting. The patient usually present with foreign body sensation and odynophagia. Owing to its sharp end in nature, migration to the surrounding structures such as thyroid gland and neck muscles and have been reported. However the migration into the trachea is an extremely rare occurrence. We present a patient with fish bone ingestion which pierced into the trachea wall which was successfully removed via bronchoscopy.International Journal of Human and Health Sciences Vol. 02 No. 01 Jan’18. Ectopic thyroid tissue may be found throughout the migration course of the thyroid gland. Thyroid ectopy may be partial or total. The most common location of ectopic thyroid tissue is in the tongue base (lingual thyroid). We discuss the computed tomography (CT) and radioisotope findings of a patient with ectopic lingual thyroid.
