Liposomes are an efficient novel drug delivery system. They are used because of their structure which is stable and due to their ability to accommodate both lipophilic and hydrophilic drug. Various fascinating types of liposomes have been developed in recent past to further enhance their utility. Long-circulating liposomes or stealth liposomes are able to hide from the defence system of the body and circulate for a longer time in the blood. Targeted liposomes namely immuno- liposomes consists of antibodies conjugated on their surface to improve the specificity of the cell. Liposomes have been modified as per the conditions of pH and temperature, specifically designed to improve drug delivery to targeted tumor cells. Liposomes are being used in the treatment of various diseases and there are various liposomal drug formulations available today. Liposomes can be used as carriers for genetic materials such as antisense, DNA, RNA which are useful in the treatment of diseases. Liposomes are also efficient carriers of cytokines which further activate macrophages. This review provides the detailed insight of types and applications of liposomes and the potential challenges in the development of liposomal drug delivery systems.

Liposome was derived from two Greek words “Lipos meaning fat and Soma meaning body”. Liposome were spherical shaped vesicles consist of phospholipids and cholesterol. Due to their size hydrophobic and lipophilic character   they are very promising system for drug delivery. This novel drug delivery system aims to target the drug directly to the site of action. Liposomes are very biocompatible and stable and have unique property to entrap both hydrophilic drug and lipophilic drug (amphiphatic nature) to its compartment and lead to   controlled release effect. They are of 0.05- 5.0 micrometer in diameter. Liposomes are used for the treatment of various diseases like tumors or cancer. This article provides an overview of Liposomal Drug Delivery System and various aspects related to liposome that can be studied. Keywords: Liposomes, novel delivery, amphiphatic, controlled release.

: Cubosomes are highly stable nanostructured liquid crystalline dosage delivery form derived from amphiphilic lipids and polymer-based stabilizers converting it in a form of effective biocompatible carrier for the drug delivery. The delivery form comprised of bicontinuous lipid bilayers arranged in three dimensional honeycombs like structure provided with two internal aqueous channels for incorporation of number of biologically active ingredients. In contrast liposomes they provide large surface area for incorporation of different types of ingredients. Due to the distinct advantages of biocompatibility and thermodynamic stability, cubosomes have remained the first preference as method of choice in the sustained release, controlled release and targeted release dosage forms as new drug delivery system for the better release of the drugs. As lot of advancement in the new form of dosage form has bring the novel avenues in drug delivery mechanisms so it was matter of worth to compile the latest updates on the various aspects of mentioned therapeutic delivery system including its structure, routes of applications along with the potential applications to encapsulate variety drugs to serve health related benefits.

Over the last few years' great advances have been made on the development drug delivery systems for different purposes for targeting the diseased conditions. Novel drug delivery originates from polymers or associated with some devices is generally related with the emergence of novel characteristics. These changes are what eventually comprise the value of drug delivery system and Novel drug delivery system. Novel properties become existed without making new materials. Novel drug delivery system comparable to traditional system, following Targeted Drug Delivery System (TDDS) is also called targeting drug system. A new drug delivery system makes the drugs densely gather pathological-change structures, and has an improved healing effect and less toxic side effects. The drugs can improve the strength of pharmacological action and reduce the bad effect all over the body, for they release in the target organs.
