AbstractIn this study, conventional WC-12Co cermet coatings were deposited on AZ91 magnesium alloy using High Velocity Oxy-Fuel spray method. The effects of different coating thicknesses (60 and 120 µm) and wear loads (20 and 30 N) on tribological properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy coated with WC-12Co were investigated. Structural, mechanical and tribological properties of WC-12Co coatings were analyzed by means of X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, micro-hardness tester and pin-on-disc tribotester. It was observed that WC-12Co coating is an effective method for improving the wear behavior of AZ91 magnesium alloy.

The present work involves the study of the effect of precipitates on mechanical and tribological properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nanoindentation were used to characterize the microstructures and mechanical properties of the alloy. In addition, the wear behavior of the alloy was deduced using a pin-on disk tribological configuration under unidirectional sliding against steel (AISI 250). The elastic modulus of AZ91 alloy was found to vary significantly with changing precipitation state. The tribological evaluations showed that the specific wear-rate of solutionized sample is lowest as compared to the aged samples. This was attributed to the absence of γ-Mg17Al12 phase. Examination of worn surfaces suggested that microploughing coupled with the adhesive mode of wear is the main wear mechanism in the aged samples.

AbstractThe influence of grain orientation on the friction and wear behavior of single-phase quasicrystalline alloys is investigated. Pin-on-disc wear tests and friction coefficient measurements have been performed on bulk samples of icosahedral phase AlPdMn and decagonal phase AlNiCo alloys. Wear behavior has been evaluated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD). Coefficient of friction values of the decagonal AlNiCo alloy are found to be widely scattered (between 0.03 and 0.55) compared to the far more consistent values of the icosahedral alloys. This is explained by considering the significant variation in wear behavior that is observed between different – sometimes adjacent – oriented grains in the decagonal specimens.
