ABSTRACTTo excel in modern STEM careers, biology majors need a range of transferrable skills, yet competency development is often a relatively underdeveloped facet of the undergraduate curriculum. Here, we have elaborated the Vision and Change core competency framework into a resource called the BioSkills Guide, a set of measurable learning outcomes that can be more readily interpreted and implemented by faculty. College biology educators representing over 250 institutions, including 73 community colleges, contributed to the development and validation of the guide. Our grassroots approach during the development phase engaged over 200 educators over the course of five iterative rounds of review and revision. We then gathered evidence of the BioSkills Guide’s content validity using a national survey of over 400 educators. Across the 77 outcomes in the final draft, rates of respondent support for outcomes were high (74.3% - 99.6%). Our national sample included college biology educators across a range of course levels, subdisciplines of biology, and institution types. We envision the BioSkills Guide supporting a variety of applications in undergraduate biology, including backward design of individual lessons and courses, competency assessment development, curriculum mapping and planning, and resource development for less well-defined competencies.

The Avoidance of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) scale is a self-report measure of the avoidance of ETS by young adults. Initial use of the scale with 30 undergraduate students showed an internal consistency of .84 across 40 items and .90 in a refined 28-item instrument. In a sample of 241 students, a 20-item scale had an internal consistency reliability of .94 and a refined 10-item scale had an internal consistency of .86. In a sample of 95 mothers with a mean age of 36, the 10-item scale had an internal consistency of .81. In three distinct samples, significant known groups’ discrimination was found between smokers and nonsmokers. Psychometric analysis indicates that the scale merits further testing using a more heterogeneous sample from community and clinical populations to ensure its usefulness by clinicians and researchers interested in explaining, predicting, and preventing exposure to ETS.

ABSTRACT Objective: to develop and validate a scale to evaluate nursing attitudes in relation to hospitality for the humanization of nursing care. Participants: the sample consisted of 499 nursing professionals and undergraduate students of the final two years of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Method: the instrument has been developed and validated to evaluate the ethical values related to hospitality using a methodological approach. Subsequently, a model was developed to measure the dimensions forming the construct hospitality. Results: the Axiological Hospitality Scale showed a high internal consistency, with Cronbach’s Alpha=0.901. The validation of the measuring instrument was performed using factorial, exploratory and confirmatory analysis techniques with high goodness of fit measures. Conclusions: the developed instrument showed an adequate validity and a high internal consistency. Based on the consistency of its psychometric properties, it is possible to affirm that the scale provides a reliable measurement of the hospitality. It was also possible to determine the dimensions or sources that embrace it: respect, responsibility, quality and transpersonal care.

Introduction Recent studies with Physiotherapy students pointed out for attitudes and conflicting perceptions on their learning process during the phase that precedes the clinical practice. One of those aspects is the human sexuality that appears in the close physical contact that demands Physiotherapists professional practices. Objective To build up the first educational/research instrument that evaluates the knowledge, the comfort and the attitudes of Physiotherapy undergraduate students (SKCAPS). Materials and methods From the literature we extracted three dimensions: knowledge, comfort and attitudes. Initially 50 items were created distributed in the three dimensions that went under the content evaluation, 47 items survived from this process and integrate the first version of SKCAPS. In empiric terms the intern coherence and the reliability of the instrument were tested in 248 students. Results The exploratory factorial analysis carried 37 items in 4 factors that explain 68% of the total variance of the answers of the subjects and that confirmed the proposed dimensions. The dimension comfort became separated in comfort and discomfort. The SKCAPS presented good reliability in terms of intern consistence alpha 0.861. Finally, the instrument was administered to 30 Physiotherapy students for evaluation of clarity following the exclusion of two items that resulted in averages below 8.5. Conclusions With the aim of improve the teaching/learning process, we propose the SKCAPS as the first worth and reliable instrument to evaluate the knowledge, the comfort, the discomfort and the attitudes regard of human sexuality among Physiotherapy students.

The purpose of this study is to validate the Group Work Contribution Scale, a scale that was developed for use as a self-assessment at the conclusion of a group project. Specifically, this scale measures the factors related to a learner’s participation within a school-based work team. A two-step validation process was conducted, using first exploratory and then confirmatory factor analysis. A total of 458 undergraduate students participated across two data collection sessions (231 and 227 participants). The refined Group Work Contribution Scale consists of four underlying factors: effort, initiative, responsibility, and backing-up behavior. The final 12-item scale for Group Work Contribution was confirmed via model fit indices.
