In a period with frequently occurring hydrological extremes, research on areas with a high retention potential is brought into focus. The Šumava Mountains peat bogs are important parts of the landscape in the headwater area of the Otava river basin. The study objective is to describe the variability of discharges and the dynamics of groundwater level changes in various types of peat bogs, and to identify connections between observed physico-chemical water properties. This is assessed by basic statistical methods. The rainfall-runoff process and physico-chemical water properties can be affected by many factors. In this case, strong relations between the observed parameters were identified along with considerable differences in the involvement of various types of peat bog sites in the runoff process. It is evident that the peat bog pattern and its vegetation cover have an essential effect on the hydrological regime and water properties stored in a peat bog.

. The photocatalytic activity of three systems, promising for chemical water purification technologies, was experimentally compared, based on a combination of titanium dioxide/(Fe(II, III)), applying to the model oxidation reaction of methylorange organic dye in an aqueous medium. Herewith the cases of photocatalytic systems were investigated, which are based on: a) titania hydrosol obtained by hydrolysis of titanium isobutylate; b) a similar hydrosol with addition of Fe(III) ions; c) suspension of ilmenite powder based on FeTiO3. As a result of the investigation, the increase of the rate of destruction of methylorange by more than two times was found in the system with the introduction of a small amount of iron ions into initial suspension of the TiO2 hydrosol (at the obtaining a medium with the Fe3+ concentration up to 3.7 × 10–5 M). In the photocatalytic system, based on the suspension of pretreated (with suphation and calcination) ilmenite powder, enough high photocatalytic activity (the degree of methylorange decomposition up to 77 %) was measured but at a higher exposure than for the case of systems based on the TiO2 hydrosol. For the photocatalytic systems of the type being investigated, a possible mechanism of increasing their oxidative activity was briefly considered, which requires an additional physico-chemical analysis.

AbstractThe physico-chemical water characteristics and basin morphology of 10 well-preserved Pomeranian peatland lakes were examined. These are acidic (pH 3.95–5.99), softwater (1.5 ±0.9 mg Ca dm−3), and oligotrophic water bodies. Their hydrochemical conditions differentiate them into two groups: poor (3.04 ±2.77 mg C dm−3) and rich (10.36 ±7.27 mg C dm−3) in organic carbon compounds. They differ in water colour (p = 0.02), humic acid concentration (p<0.001), redox potential (p = 0.007), and irradiance (PAR; p = 0.03).The hydrochemistry of the lakes is determined by their basin morphology, which affects the water colour and the concentrations of humic acids and organic carbon compounds.

AbstractThe influences of river regulations on aquatic biota are insufficiently investigated. We assessed the level of ecological disturbance of the mayfly assemblages through the damming and flow alterations at two highly regulated Mediterranean rivers in Croatia: the Cetina River and its tributary, the Ruda. Contrary to our hypotheses, species richness, abundance and diversity of mayflies increased along the river’s course. At the sites directly influenced by the river regulations, mayfly assemblage changed: it was less diverse and less abundant. However, no obvious influence of the river regulation on the mayfly assemblages was detected for the sites that were indirectly influenced by these alterations. This was most likely due to specific karst hydrology, i.e., the presence of lateral springs along the course of the river. Multidimensional scaling analysis (MDS) revealed grouping of sites according to the similarity in physico-chemical water properties. The pH and water temperature were the most important environmental variables influencing mayfly assemblages. The data on ecology and distribution of mayflies presented in the current study represent a valuable background for further research and conservation practices in the Mediterranean region.

Biological filters are wastewater treatment systems that contain a granular filling material, which form an active biological film that contribute to the biooxidation of impurities from the wastewater. Recent research in the field aimed to improve the classical treatment facilities with aerobic fixed film by using inexpensive and easily accessible materials as filterable loading. Experiments have been carried out on biological filters loaded with volcanic tuff, with a diameter between 20-100 mm, supplied with municipal wastewater from primary settling. The biological filtration efficiency has been etablished throughout the continuous functioning of the experimental installation by physico-chemical water analysis. The analyzed indicators have been the ones stipulated by the legislation in force, namely: pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended matter (TS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), etc. The analysed wastewater samples have been average samples. The treatment efficiency have been calculated in various hypotheses, depending on the: installation capacity, hydraulic loading, organic loading.
