In the IRT person-fluctuation model, the individual trait levels fluctuate within a single test administration whereas the items have fixed locations. This article studies the relations between the person and item parameters of this model and two central properties of item and test scores: temporal stability and external validity. For temporal stability, formulas are derived for predicting and interpreting item response changes in a test-retest situation on the basis of the individual fluctuations. As for validity, formulas are derived for obtaining disattenuated estimates and for predicting changes in validity in groups with different levels of fluctuation. These latter formulas are related to previous research in the person-fit domain. The results obtained and the relations discussed are illustrated with an empirical example.

To obtain evidence as to whether either learning or forgetting occurs on unreinforced trials and to adduce principles of optimal programming of reinforced (R) and test (T) trials, two experiments were planned each having four conditions with different repetitive R-T sequences: RTRT …, RRTRRT …, RTTRTT …, and RRTTRRTT. … 50 college students in each experiment learned 5 paired associates under each condition. Performance on successive Ts without intervening reinforcement suggested that neither learning nor forgetting occurred on Ts per se. However, the occurrence of Ts increased the effectiveness of subsequent Rs. A stimulus fluctuation model accounted for the major acquisition and retention phenomena, including the differential rates of learning under the different R-T sequences.

The magnetic properties of U 1-x Dy x Al y Ni 5-y (y=0,1) systems were investigated in the 2(5)–600 K temperature range and for fields up to 80 kOe. The systems having x≥0.2 are magnetically ordered with low transition temperatures and magnetization mainly due to the Dy contribution. The nickel exhibits magnetic moments, very weak in the low temperature range and well-defined effective moments over transition temperatures. The nickel behavior is discussed in terms of the spin fluctuation model.

Natural orbitals obtained within the coherent density fluctuation model and containing nucleon correlation effects are used to calculate characteristics of the A-nucleon system, such as the electron elastic magnetic scattering form factors. The calculations are performed for nuclei with a doubly-closed core and a valence nucleon in a stretched configuration (j=l+1/2), such as the 17 O and 41 Ca nuclei. It is shown that the calculations of the transverse form factor using natural orbitals improve the agreement with the experimental data in comparison with the case when shell-model single-particle wave functions are used.
