This introductory chapter provides an overview of time-delay systems. Time-delay systems, also called systems with after-effect or dead-time, hereditary systems, equations with deviating argument, or differential-difference equations, are ubiquitous in practice. Some representative examples are found in chemical industry, electrical and mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and management and traffic science. The most common forms of time delay in dynamic phenomena that arise in engineering practice are actuator and sensor delays. Due to the time it takes to receive the information needed for decision-making, to compute control decisions, and to execute these decisions, feedback systems often operate in the presence of delays. The chapter then illustrates the possible methods in control of time-delay systems. This book develops adaptive and robust predictor feedback laws for the compensation of the five uncertainties for general linear time-invariant (LTI) systems with input delays.

The stabilizing decentralized controller design problem for (possibly descriptor-type) linear time-invariant neutral time-delay systems is considered. A design approach, based on the continuous pole placement algorithm and the decentralized pole assignment algorithm, is proposed. A design example is also presented, to demonstrate the proposed approach.

AbstractThis paper is aimed at reviewing the ring of retarded quasipolynomial meromorphic functions (RMS) that was recently introduced as a convenient control design tool for linear, time-invariant time delay systems (TDS). It has been found by the authors that the original definition does not constitute a ring and has some essential deficiencies, and hence it could not be used for an algebraic control design without a thorough reformulation which i.a. extends the usability to neutral TDS and to those with distributed delays. This contribution summarizes the original definition of RMSsimply highlights its deficiencies via examples, and suggests a possible new extended definition. Hence, the new ring of quasipolynomial meromorphic functions RQMis established to avoid confusion. The paper also investigates and introduces selected algebraic properties supported by some illustrative examples and concisely outlines its use in controller design.

Linear time-invariant descriptor-type time-delay systems are considered. A robust stabilizing controller design approach for such systems is introduced. Uncertainties both in the time-delays and in other system parameters are considered. A frequency-dependent scalar bound on such uncertainties is first derived. Once this bound is found, the controller design is completely based on the nominal model. However, satisfying a scalar frequency-dependent condition, which uses the derived bound, guarantees robust stability. An example is also presented to illustrate the proposed approach
