Abstract This preliminary research is as a part of learning need analysis for developing a discourse based writing material with a timed-writing technique in an English teacher education department in Indonesia. In timed writing practice (TWP), students must write a paragraph on a sheet of paper without help in a given time limit. However, no empirical information on whether the students agree or disagree with the application of timed writing and the reasons behind their perceptions is not yet avaiable. The research subjects consist of 31 students who take writing course. The objectives are to investigate (1) the extent of the students’ acceptance and (2) the reasons behind the acceptance on the application of timed-writing practice (TWP) in writing class. A qualitative analysis is administered by identifying and classifying contents of students’ opinions and reflections expressed in the students’ responses to questionare. Twenty five students (81%) agree with the application of TW. Four students (13%) disagree and 2 students (6%) give no preference. Timed writing are perceived as (1) Encouraging Writing Activity,  (2) Improving Time Management and Control, (3) Training Thinking Skills, (4) Improving Writing Skills, (5)Training Speed Writing, (6) Improving Soft Skills, (7) Giving Challenging Activity, and (8) Improving Concentration and Accuracy.  The reasons from those who disagree are: (1) Feeling nervous and confused (2) Having insufficient preparation time, and (3) Expecting Variation of Activity. In conclusion, timed writing is mostly accepted and positively perceived by the students with very high category. Reasons from those who disagree must also be taken into consideration for future betterment. Based on the research findings, the timed writing, accordingly, can be used as a technique or a strategy to be integrated in a discourse-based writing material for students of English teacher education program.Key Words: Timed-Writing, Students’ Acceptance, Reasons

Metode penelitian Research and Development (R&D) Borg and Gall dengan 9 tahapan. Abstract: Utilization of technology is not realized even though the use of technological media such as android interactive multimedia can make learning more effective and effective. This study was designed to develop interactive multimedia that is integrated with the value of science seen in terms of the feasibility and effectiveness of interactive multimedia integrated with the value of science as a solution to improve students' critical thinking skills. Borg and Gall Research and Development (R&D) Method with 9 stages. The research subjects added three validator experts namely media, materials, and linguists. And students of class XI MIPA as a research sample consisting of two classes, namely the control class (XI MIPA 6) and the experimental class (XI MIPA 4). The results of research data on the feasibility of the product seen from the percentage validator were media experts at 87.10%, material experts at 83.00% and linguists 83.08% with the criteria "Very Eligible" and the response of students at 85.33% which shows the "Very Attractive" criteria. The effectiveness of interactive multimedia from the students' critical ability test results with the Independent t test resulted in tcount of 7.95 and ttable of 1.70 which means tcount> ttable and H1 were received and the average value of the N-Gain value of the research class was 0, 66 and control class 0.29.Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that interactive multimedia integrated with the value of science is very feasible and effective as a medium of learning biology as a solution to improve critical thinking skills of students in the XI MIPA class of students in SMA Negeri 5 Bandar Lampung.Keyword: Biology; Critical thinking skills; Interactive multimedia; The value of science

The purpose of this study is to know the students’ process in formulating research question in writing 4 (proposal) and also to know their reason why they choose that steps in formulating research question. This study used qualitative design and chooses descriptive methods to describe the data in this study. The researcher used interview guidelines gained the data through semi structured interview. This study used all of students in English Teacher Education Department in academic years 2012. The numbers of students in this study are 80 students. After gained the data from interview, the researcher used coding to classify the data, then used theory to assess whether the students’ process in formulating research question is appropriate with the theory or not. The result shows that there are 7 types in formulating research question (from title, problem, journal, thesis, issue, topic and consulting to their lecturer). From each type, the researchers conclude that there was some students just follow 1 step in good process of formulating research question. There was one student just follow the first step (choose an interesting topic) in formulating research question. The others, just follow the second step (Do some preliminary research in your general topic). There was no student used all of good process in formulating research question. So the researchers conclude that there was no students at English Teacher Education Department Students follow good process in formulating research question.

This research aims to study students’ High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in Primary Teacher Education Department of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) viewed from their Self-Regulated Learning (SRL). The research method in this research is a mixed method of a sequential explanatory model. This research was conducted in the Department of Primary Teacher Education at UNNES for students of class 2020 in the Basic Mathematical Concept course. Data collection techniques using questionnaires, documentation, interviews. Analysis of quantitative data in the form of validity and reliability of the instrument was followed by descriptive analysis. Qualitative data analysis was performed by triangulation and descriptive statistical analysis. Analysis of quantitative data found two categories of the level of SRL, namely medium and high levels. The results of the analysis of student answers were obtained: (1) Students with moderate SRL category interpret the questions into Mathematical language, and the way they identified the problem is less communicative, while the students with high SRL category interpret the questions into Mathematical language communicatively; (2) Based on students’ ability to evaluate, students with moderate SRL category have not been fluent yet, while the students with high SRL category have been fluent in evaluating, and (3) Based on their creativity, students with moderate SRL still need more practices, while students with high SRL category have been fluent. The conclusion of this study is the ability to interpret problems and the habit of examining problem-solving carried out into the differences between the two categories.
