This study explores thematic progressions in two excerpts from Amma Darko’s Faceless. The study aims at looking into the different types of thematic progressions used in the selected excerpts to decode there-from the deep meanings linguistically encoded by the author. The study further aims at examining how the different thematic progressions used in the studied texts contribute to their cohesion and contextual coherence. The research appeals to the mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology. Via this method, the number of thematic progression patterns identified has been quantified per excerpt to pave the way to the interpretation of the findings that ensued. The study has arrived at impressive results. Among several others available in the interpretation of the findings subsection, Amma Darko has purposefully not used the Split-Rheme Pattern to avoid a complex writing style that would make her writing not accessible to her readership. The simple linear thematic progression and the overriding theme reiteration patterns extensively used in both texts have allowed the author to emphasize the key thematic points of the studied texts. Moreover, the theme reiteration development strategy used in both texts has provided them with clear focuses. Some of these include skin bleaching, tradition and marriage in Africa, street children, women’s life conditions in Ghana to name but a few. For deeper meanings decoding in the studied excerpts, further studies on discourse-semantics, contextual coherence, conjunctive and lexical relations, as well as experiential and interpersonal meanings could pick up from this article findings.

The patterns of thematic progression, greatly influenced by culture-peculiar thinking patterns and language-particular features, reflect the integration of form and meaning in the flow of information in discourse. The economic discourse has its distinct linguistic characteristics and important communicative purposes. Thus, related research on the thematic progression of economic discourse is important for us to understand the language use in the context of economic and financial activities and also has important implications for language learning and teaching, translation, automated language information processing etc. This study first employs CiteSpace, a document visualization tool, to review the existing related studies on the economic discourse in China, and then analyzes the major patterns of thematic progression in the economic discourse based on the English and Chinese reports from The Economist. Through our discussion, we aim to explore universals and peculiarities of thematic progression in English-Chinese economic discourse and discuss the reasons attributing to major distinctions between the two languages in terms of thematic progression.

Abstract: Twenty research papers published in international conference proceedings are analyzed in terms of its thematic progression manifestation to know the coherence built within the papers. The analysis obtained that among the three thematic progression manifest, zig-zag pattern is the most frequent pattern manifest by 388 patterns, followed by theme reiteration by 317 patterns and multiple rheme by only 8 patterns. This indicates that although the writers are lack of information regarding thematic progression, their unconscious manifestation of thematic progression allows the coherence built within the text, making the readers able to comprehend and understand the papers easily.

This paper analyzes Thematic Progression pattern and its role in the process of text translation, providing a new perspective for the current translation teaching. TP pattern can be used as a reference object before translation to avoid the translator's mistakes in information transmission; after translation, it can also be a means to test the cohesion and coherence of the translation. In order to preserve the style of the original text, it is necessary to maintain the same TP pattern as the source text in translating activity, which is the foothold of this research. Therefore, the article proposes that in English-Chinese translation, the same TP pattern as the source text should be maintained as much as possible, in order to achieve the purpose of retaining the original style. Nevertheless, all this is based on the premise that the meaning of the original text will not be misunderstood.

Abstract This article aims to analyze the deep structure of sentences by applying the knot semantic logic principle in the surface structure of the sentences. This article will help to judge some controversial statements that have legal and social effects. The knot semantic logic theory is a novel approach to explaining a literature’s symmetry structure. Chiasm, parallelism, and concentricity are all examples of symmetry structure. This new theory introduces a new method for detecting symmetry in words, sentences, verses, essays, chapters, and entire books. This analysis will use Knot semantic logic point of view. The methodology used in the analysis has two main procedures: (1) classification of the structure and (2) analyzing some examples from some official/formal statements and controversial statements using Paltridge’s classification of thematic progression and knot semantic logic. The result of this research is that the valid argument has surface and Deep Structure. Some fallacies statements such as presumption, generalization, distortion, and deletion have a deep structure that forms ring composition (Type I of knots semantic logic) and parallelizations (Type III of knots semantic logic). This research results generate a new idea about perspective truth, Original perspective domain, and Response perspective domain

Coherence and cohesion are considered two main elements of essay writing. Despite their importance in writing, they are still regarded as difficult to teach and learn as compared to grammar and spelling. Theme-rheme development is suggested to be a tool to teach coherence and cohesion in writing. This experimental study was carried out to verify whether the teaching of theme-rheme approach helps the learners to improve their textual coherence. Forty graduate-level students (20 males and 20 females), aging between 19 and 23, participated in the study. The participants were equally divided into two groups. The experimental group was taught coherence and cohesion by using the thematic progression method, whereas the controlled group was taught by using the ordinary method. Pre- and post-tests were conducted to compare the effects of the thematic progression method. The findings show that the teaching of coherence and cohesion through the thematic progression method helped the learners to improve their essay writing quality. The experimental group outweighed the controlled group as it got twice higher marks in the post-test than the pre-test. In contrast, the controlled group showed a negligible improvement.

The theory of theme and rheme and the patterns of thematic progression are not only two important parts of the systemic functional grammar but also an important means of discourse analysis. With thematic structure theory and patterns of thematic progression as the theoretical support, this research makes a combination of theoretical research and discourse analysis. This paper aims to find out the application and characteristics of the theme and rheme structure in English news discourse. After choosing the data from BBC (website:https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-51403795) reporting on 7th February 2020 with the title of Li Wenliang: Coronavirus Kills Chinese Whistleblower Doctor and giving a detailed analysis by empirical study. Through the analysis of the relationship between theme and rheme in the full text, we find that this text does not only apply a certain thematic progression pattern, but also applies more than one thematic progression pattern. Therefore, we come to the conclusion that thematic progression does exist in this news discourse and shows obvious characteristics and distribution. And also, parallel pattern and continuation pattern are frequently presented in this news discourse.
