Located in the Iron Gates Natural Park, Romania, at the foot of the Locvei Mountains, the Sfanta Elena Karst Plateau is a very picturesque territory, characterized by a karst relief, covered by High Nature Value grasslands. In the last decade this territory has been subjected to increasing anthropogenic pressures, and specific concerns on biodiversity have been raised after the construction of a wind farm in 2011. Starting from a concern expressed by a scientist, our study aims to provide current data on plant species with conservation value and to assess the conservation status of orchid-rich grasslands around wind turbines after ten years of wind farm operation. During the operation period we identified 19 plant taxa with conservation value, eight of which which are orchid species. Four of them are new reports for this territory: Gymnadenia conopsea, Neotinea ustulata, Neottia nidus-avis and Orchis simia, as well other rare taxa such as Cirsium grecescui, Lathyrus sphaericus, Linum hologynum and Rumex thyrsiflorus, are mentioned for the first time. The orchid-rich grasslands in the wind farm area correspond to the Natura 2000 habitat 6210* whose structure and floristic composition are within the acceptable limits of Favourable conservation status. The conservation status of plant species is directly dependent on the quality of their habitat, as well as the variety of pressure and threat factors in the area.

Natura 2000 sites and fisheries in German offshore waters.–ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 155–169. The principal objective of sites selected as part of Natura 2000 is to achieve or maintain a favourable conservation status of habitats and species named in the EU Birds and Habitats directives. In the German exclusive economic zone, the habitat types protected by this legislation are sandbanks and reefs; protected species include marine mammals, seabirds, and specific migratory fish species. The ICES project Environmentally Sound Fishery Management in Protected Areas (EMPAS) aims to answer two questions: (i) To what extent do specific fishing activities significantly threaten attainment of the conservation objectives of the Natura 2000 sites? (ii) What management measures would reduce these conflicts and how effective would they be at helping to ensure the favourable condition of these sites? Assessments of fishing impacts on Natura 2000 sites require basic data on the conservation status of individual habitats and species, as well as data for fine-scale distributions of ongoing fishing activities. This paper describes and discusses the process used by the EMPAS project in developing fishery-management plans for each Natura 2000 site in German offshore waters.

Abstract Phytosociological structure of the communities dominated by Scirpus sylvaticus was studied in the mountain area of Mureş County with focus on vegetation community organization, floristic composition and habitat conservation. The vegetation sampling and data analysis were done following standard procedures. The study of wet meadows from the Călimani and Gurghiului Mountains carried out in field during 2015-2019, highlights the presence of hygrophilous coenoses belonging to the Scirpetum sylvatici Ralski 1931 plant association. These wet meadows grow on alluvial, gleyic and acidophilous soils. The identified communities belong to Natura 2000 habitat 6430 Hydrophilous tall-herb fringe communities of plains in the montane to alpine levels. The conservation status of the habitat is good and very good and the floristic composition emphasizes a rich floristic diversity.

The designation and implementation of Natura 2000 sites faced many challenges across most of the member states in the EC. Some related to consultation and involvement of stakeholders, funding the conservation objectives and providing compensation to land owners, farmers and foresters for restrictions on their land use. The national governments adopted different approaches to address these issues. The aim of the paper is to assess the governance approach for agricultural land in Natura 2000 in Bulgaria with a focus on the contribution of the Natura 2000 compensatory payments. The results suggest that the measure is instrumental in mitigating farmers’ frustration and in providing support to them; although its contribution to the favourable conservation status is still uncertain. Another weakness is the lack of awareness on Natura 2000 location and restrictions as well as on nature-friendly farming practices among farmers.

Abstract The main threats to the Rhodeus amarus (Bloch, 1782) populations in the Natura 2000 site Oltul Mijlociu - Cibin - Hârtibaciu are the hydro technical modifications of the riverbeds, chemical pollution and poachery. ADONIS:CE is used in general for modeling business processes, but here was used in ecology/biology domain. The authors obtained a Rhodeus amarus model which included all the habitat species requirements, the indicators that provide favourable conservation status and the existing threats and pressures. The maintaining of the minor riverbed morphodynamics is very important - the meanders presence is very important for the local molluscs which are living in the inner U shape parts of the river. The places, where the sediments (sand, mud) are relatively stable, provide suitable habitats for molluscs important for the breeding of Rhodeus amarus. The maintaining of the actual regimes of liquid flows and oxygenation, and the avoidance of increasing of the sediments deposition rate in the water are necessary also for those molluscs species presence conservation. The extraction of sediments in these rivers should be made in correspondence with their natural rate of refilling and at sites at a distance of minimum five kilometres from each other.

UDK: 581.55(497.6) The ecosystems of the class Festuco-Brometea in Bosnia and Herzegovina play an important role in the overall biological diversity. They are distinguished by a large number of vegetation units, as well as by significant number of rare, endemic or relict plant species. The study area, Prečko polje, covers 1.27  at 1100 m a.s.l., and takes place in the heart of mountain complex Treskavica-Visočica-Bjelašnica. We analised thermophylous meadows of Prečko polje after method of phytocoenological relevé. The class Festuco-Brometea in study area is being differentiated into the alliances Xerobromion erecti (with suballiance Fumano-Scabiosenion leucophyllae) and Mesobromion erecti (with suballiance Eu-Mesobromenion). In general, thermophylous meadows are characterized by high degree of species diversity. Moreover, within thermophylous meadows of Prečko polje we have identified nine species which are considered to have certain conservation status, according to the national and/or international legislation. Our study has shown that investigated area should be considered as potential Natura 2000 site for it is inhabited by a significant number of rare and/or endangered orchid species.

Through this study, the objective was to contribute to the knowledge regarding floristic composition, classification and conservation status of the studied plant species as well as the dispersion syndromes of flora found in a disjoint Cerrado area ​in the Chapada do Araripe, Crato-CE. For the research development Rapid Survey method, applied in three walking lines (Line 1, Line 2 and Line 3) was adopted. Floriferous branches, fruits and seeds from species in the study area were collected in order to identify them and to characterize their diaspores, in view of fitting them into the corresponding dispersion syndromes. A total of 103 species were identified, the richest species taxa were: Fabaceae, Apocynaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Malpighiaceae and Myrtaceae. The most abundant species in the studied area were: Cordiera myrciifolia (“bola”) Miconia albicans (“Candeiro-de-pelo”), Caryocar coriaceum (pequi) and Copaifera langsdorffii (“pau d'oleo”). Three new occurrences were also recorded for the state of Ceará: Eriope tumidicaulis, Myrciaria cf. tenella and Stachytapheta cf. crassifolia. The most frequent dispersion syndrome was zoochoria, followed by anemocoria. Considering that most of the species occurring in the study area have their dispersion diaspores transported by a fauna element, the importance of these species for the maintenance of the observed floristic richness is evident.

The list of habitats of community interest within the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0233, as provided in the Natura 2000 standard, comprises 8 habitats of community interest. Two important activities were carried out: identification and inventory of habitats and species and assessment of negative influences that could affect the natural distribution area, the structure and functions. The assessment of the conservation status has highlighted the existence of significant anthropogenic pressures on some habitats (deforestation, land use change), which led to their unfavorable conservation status (habitat 9410, habitat 91D0*, habitat 91E0*, habitat 9110, habitat 9130).

Abstract The ADONIS:CE was utilised here, in the biology/ecology domain, to produce a framework management model of Zingel zingel fish species based on this species’ identified needs, regarding: the habitat, the indicators which reveal the favourable conservation status and the proper measures, and the identified pressures and threats on this fish species. If these suggested management elements will not be implemented in ROSCI0132, the presence of the Zingel zingel species will be endangered in the next one or two decades. Such management systems, based on: the site, the habitats and on numerous species should be implemented in the conservative interest Natura 2000 case of ROSCI0132.

The Tanoe-Ehy Forest, located in the South-Eastern of the Côte d’Ivoire is one of the rare forest cover of this type that still exists in the Country. These Forest was identified as a top priority site for conservation in West Africa. However, this important forest is subject to strong anthropogenic pressures which through poaching, uncontrolled takeoffs of natural resources and some agricultural clearing. A Botanical study based on plots, itinerant and linear inventory conducted in this forest intends to assess the plant species diversity and the conservation value for biodiversity of this forest. At the end of the study, 432 plant species were recorded. Among them, 14 are listed on endemic of Upper Guinea and 16 threatened and endangered list of species. Concerning the species threatened and endangering, 3 species are really in endangering (Hemandradenia chevalieri, Tieghemella heckelii, Irvingia gabonensis) and 13 others are a category of vulnerable species. A Sassandrian species of type II (Piptostigma fugax) was also observed. The dominant species of the forest are Symphonia globulifera and Uapaca paludosa. Concerning the vegetation condition, the swamp forest, the dry land forest and the raphiale vegetation have a high conservation value.
