The study examined differences in ratings by males and females of the social images of seven disadvantaged groups in employment situations: women, hippies, North American Indians, ex-criminals, ex-mental patients, Negroes, and mental retardates. Average adults were also rated for comparative data. A 67-item Osgood-type rating scale yielded significant over-all differences between ratings by men and women of: women, hippies, mental retardates, and average adults. There were non-significant differences in the ratings of North American Indians, ex-criminals, ex-mental patients, and Negroes.

Four hundred and thirty subjects rated the social images of eight groups on 67 variables which previous study has shown to be important in employment hiring situations. The groups rated were: Average Adults, Women, Mental Retardates, Ex-Mental Patients, Ex-Criminals, Hippies, Blacks and North American Indians. A factor analysis yielded six major dimensions in the social images: Appearance, Sincerity, Ability, Outspokenness, Fortitude and Security. The variations in the factor scores of the eight groups were examined to clarify the disadvantages of each group in hiring situations.
