Subject. The article discusses limited sources of energy nowadays and an ongoing survey of new ones. I focus on fuel and energy complexes worldwide and in Russia. Objectives. The study is to analyze the future use of alternative energy sources in the fuel and energy complex nationwide and worldwide. I review the existing energy sources of the fuel and energy complex in the global and regional markets, specifically the alternative ones. Methods. The study relies upon methods of statistics, analysis and systems approach. Results. The article demonstrates that the fuel and energy complex strongly depends on the current situation in the energy resource market, which is difficult to forecast. If we continue relying on traditional energy resources, we get exposed to some risks affecting the sustainable development of the economy. Russia should diversify the power engineering sector by developing alternative energy sources. The article sets forth the economic rationale for alternative sources and key steps Russia shall make. Conclusions and Relevance. Considering the current situation in the energy balance, alternative energy is what any advanced society seeks for, being supported by manufacturers, governmental institutions, and researchers, though low profitability and high infrastructure costs impede its development. In Russia, these challenges are even more palpable. However, even now Russia is able to find alternative energy solutions. In addition to advantages of alternative energy, which is globally proclaimed, they will also help Russia diversify and update the economic system.

The article defines and systematizes the factors of innovation and investment activity in the development of alternative energy sources, followed by the separation of those groups of factors that have a dominant influence on the processes of ensuring innovation and investment activity in the development of alternative energy sources. The volumes of global investments in alternative energy sources are analyzed, in particular, it is determined that wind energy and biofuels have become the most investment attractive to foreign investors. It is identified that solar energy is characterized by rapid development and has the largest scale of construction of new capacities in Ukraine. The comparison of real indicators of renewable energy sources with the planned ones in accordance with the National Renewable Energy Action Plan until 2020 and the Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035 «Security, Energy Efficiency, Competitiveness» was carried out. It is determined that Ukraine, although it lags behind the global pace of implementation of the use of renewable energy sources, still has a tendency to reduce the consumption of traditional fuels, in particular imported natural gas. It is substantiated that at the center of the multidimensional system of factors of innovation and investment development of alternative energy sources should be the purpose of satisfying the interests of each individual citizen as the driving force of the necessary reforms on the effective use of territorial resources, as well as to ensure the sustainable development of the country. It is emphasized that precisely the innovative nature of development should cover a comprehensive study of all factors that are part of the relevant field of scientific knowledge, the achievement of scientific and technological progress, efficient socio-economic and environmental technologies. The need to focus on finding solutions and substantiating the effectivity of the implementation of alternative energy of the entire accumulated human, production and technological potential is determined. It is emphasized that the effective and dynamic use of alternative energy sources for Ukraine is a strategically important task, the solution of which will reduce the anthropogenic load on the environment, as well as increase the number of jobs, financial revenues to budgets of all levels, which, in turn, will lead to the sustainable development of the region and the country as a whole.

The article consider the role of energy factor in historical process of the first three industrial revolutions. The efficiency of modern alternative energy sources compared with traditional sources is being studied, as well as prospects for "green" energy sources to become a resource base for economic growth and a new technoeconomic paradigm. The potential of the modern energy resource base to provide mass automation of production cycles is being estimated.

The paper presents the main aspects of rapeseed production and processing in Ukraine in the context of Ukraine’s joining EU. Current situation of rapeseed market and some aspects of exporting activity in this sphere were characterized. A set of possible directions of development of the situation in Ukraine including possible influences of UE’s policy in the sphere of alternative energy sources were presented, as well as changes of volumes of rape production. The paper also analyses the activity of Ukrainian government connected to the rapeseed production and processing, including avoidance of possible pathological Ukraine’s transformation into mere Europe’s raw materials’ supplier.
