AbstractIn this article we propose a hybrid method based on a local meshless method and the Laplace transform for approximating the solution of linear one dimensional partial differential equations in the sense of the Caputo–Fabrizio fractional derivative. In our numerical scheme the Laplace transform is used to avoid the time stepping procedure, and the local meshless method is used to produce sparse differentiation matrices and avoid the ill conditioning issues resulting in global meshless methods. Our numerical method comprises three steps. In the first step we transform the given equation to an equivalent time independent equation. Secondly the reduced equation is solved via a local meshless method. Finally, the solution of the original equation is obtained via the inverse Laplace transform by representing it as a contour integral in the complex left half plane. The contour integral is then approximated using the trapezoidal rule. The stability and convergence of the method are discussed. The efficiency, efficacy, and accuracy of the proposed method are assessed using four different problems. Numerical approximations of these problems are obtained and validated against exact solutions. The obtained results show that the proposed method can solve such types of problems efficiently.

The aim of this work is the development of a novel framework for structural optimization using bio-inspired remodelling algorithm adapted to additive manufacturing. The fact that polylactic acid (PLA, E = 3145 MPa (Young’s modulus) according to the supplier for parts obtained by injection) shows a similar parameterized behavior with ductile metals, in the sense that both materials are characterized by a bi-linear elastic-plastic law, allows to simulate and prototype parts to be further constructed in ductile metals at a lower cost and then be produced with more expensive fabrication processes. Moreover, cellular materials allow for a significant weight reduction and therefore reduction of production costs. Structural optimization algorithms based on biological phenomena were used to determine the density distribution of the infill density of the specimens. Several simple structures were submitted to distinct complex load cases and analyzed using the mentioned optimization algorithms combined with the finite element method and a meshless method. The surface was divided according to similar density and then converted to stereolitography files and infilled with the gyroid structure at the desired density determined before, using open-source slicing software. Smoothing functions were used to smooth the density field obtained with the remodeling algorithms. The samples were printed with fused filament fabrication technology and submitted to mechanical flexural tests similar to the ones analyzed analytically, namely three- and four-point bending tests. Thus, the factors of analysis were the smoothing parameter and the remodeling method, and the responses evaluated were stiffness, specific stiffness, maximum force, and mass. The experimental results correlated (obtaining accuracy of 35% for the three-point bending load case and 5% for the four-point bending load case) to the numerical results in terms of flexural stiffness and it was found that the complexity of the load case is relevant for the efficiency of the functional gradient. The fused filament fabrication process is still not accurate enough to be able to experimentally compare the results based of finite element method and meshless method analyses.

Abstract This research work is to study the numerical solution of three-dimensional second-order hyperbolic telegraph equations using an efficient local meshless method based on radial basis function (RBF). The model equations are used in nuclear material science and in the modeling of vibrations of structures. The explicit time integration technique is utilized to semi-discretize the model in the time direction whereas the space derivatives of the model are discretized by the proposed local meshless procedure based on multiquadric RBF. Numerical experiments are performed with the proposed numerical scheme for rectangular and non-rectangular computational domains. The proposed method solutions are converging quickly in comparison with the different existing numerical methods in the recent literature.

Additive manufacturing is an emergent technology, which witnessed a large growth demanded by the consumer market. Despite this growth, the technology needs scientific regulation and guidelines to be reliable and consistent to the point that is feasible to be used as a source of manufactured end-products. One of the processes that has seen the most significant development is the fused deposition modeling, more commonly known as 3D printing. The motivation to better understand this process makes the study of extrusion of materials important. In this work, the radial point interpolation method, a meshless method, is applied to the study of extrusion of viscoplastic materials, using the formulation originally intended for the finite element method, the flow formulation. This formulation is based on the reasoning that solid materials under those conditions behave like non-Newtonian fluids. The time stepped analysis follows the Lagrangian approach taking advantage of the easy remeshing inherent to meshless methods. To validate the newly developed numerical tool, tests are conducted with numerical examples obtained from the literature for the extrusion of aluminum, which is a more common problem. Thus, after the performed validation, the algorithm can easily be adapted to simulate the extrusion of polymers in fused deposition modeling processes.

In this paper, we propose a meshless method for solving the mathematical model concerning the leakage problem when the pressure is tested in the gas pipeline. The method of radial basis function (RBF) can be used for solving partial differential equation by writing the solution in the form of linear combination of radius basis functions, that is, when integrating the definite conditions, one can find the combination coefficients and then the numerical solution. The leak problem is a kind of inverse problem that is focused by many engineers or mathematical researchers. The strength of the leak can find easily by the additional conditions and the numerical solutions.
