Effective optimization is essential for interactive systems to provide a satisfactory user experience. However, it is often challenging to find an objective to optimize for. Generally, such objectives are manually crafted and rarely capture complex user needs in an accurate manner. We propose to infer the objective directly from observed user interactions. These inferences can be made regardless of prior knowledge and across different types of user behavior. It is promising if we model the objectives directly from the user interactions which we use to optimize interactive systems, which will improve user experience and dynamically reacts to user actions.

AbstractUser experience (UX) focused business needs to survive and plan its new product development (NPD) activities in a highly turbulent environment. The latter is a function of volatile UX and technology trends, competition, unpredictable events, and user needs uncertainty. To address this problem, the concept of design roadmapping has been proposed in the literature. It was argued that tools built on the idea of design roadmapping have to be very flexible and data-driven (i.e., be able to receive feedback from users in an iterative manner). At the same time, a model-based approach to roadmapping has emerged, promising to achieve such flexibility. In this work, we propose to incorporate design roadmapping to model-based roadmapping and integrate it with various user testing approaches into a single tool to support a flexible data-driven NPD planning process.

This paper describes data-driven modelling methods and their use for the control of a novel set of series-elastic actuators (SEAs). A set of elastic actuators was developed in order to fulfill the end-user needs for tailored industrial collaborative robot manipulators of different morphologies and payloads. Three different types of elastic actuation were investigated, namely, disc springs, coil springs and torsion bars. The developed algorithms were validated both on single actuators and on a 6-DOF robotic arm composed of such actuators.

AbstractComputer-related attributions are cognitions related to the causes and effects of user interactions – or, in other words, subjective explanations of users of why specific system reactions occur. Prior research has revealed different attribution styles, which influence how users interact with computers and how they perceive situations of failure and success. In this paper, we report on a study investigating how computer-related attributions influence users’ perceptions and evaluations of interactive systems. To that end, we conducted usability tests with $\mathrm{N}=74$ users and measured both system evaluations and attributions. Results show correlations between attributions and usability as well as user experience measures, indicating that users’ attributions do influence their evaluations of the test systems. Furthermore, gender differences were revealed. Practical and research implications are described.

This paper presents UXmood, a tool that provides quantitative and qualitative information to assist researchers and practitioners in the evaluation of user experience and usability. The tool uses and combines data from video, audio, interaction logs and eye trackers, presenting them in a configurable dashboard on the web. The UXmood works analogously to a media player, in which evaluators can review the entire user interaction process, fast-forwarding irrelevant sections and rewinding specific interactions to repeat them if necessary. Besides, sentiment analysis techniques are applied to video, audio and transcribed text content to obtain insights on the user experience of participants. The main motivations to develop UXmood are to support joint analysis of usability and user experience, to use sentiment analysis for supporting qualitative analysis, to synchronize different types of data in the same dashboard and to allow the analysis of user interactions from any device with a web browser. We conducted a user study to assess the data communication efficiency of the visualizations, which provided insights on how to improve the dashboard.

If schools are to prepare students to participate more productively in civic life, schools will need to ensure that they have opportunities to practice the skills of civic reasoning, argues Carol Lee. Yet schools are challenged by the limits in the curriculum and the difficulty of addressing the different types of prior knowledge that students bring to the classroom. Lee suggests that when schools build their content and pedagogy on current understandings of human learning, they will be better able to enable students from all backgrounds to practice building the understandings they need, now and in the future.

AbstractInfectious disease transmission models often stratify populations by age and geographic patches. Contact patterns between age groups and patches are key parameters in such models. Arenas et al. (2020) develop an approach to simulate contact patterns associated with recurrent mobility between patches, such as due to work, school, and other regular travel. Using their approach, mixing between patches is greater than mobility data alone would suggest, because individuals from patches A and B can form a contact if they meet in patch C. We build upon their approach to address three potential gaps that remain. First, our approach includes a distribution of contacts by age that is responsive to underlying age distribution of the mixing pool. Second, different age distributions by contact type are also maintained in our approach, such that changes to the numbers of different types of contacts are appropriately reflected in changes to the overall age mixing patterns. Finally, we introduce and distinguish between two mixing pools associated with each patch, with possible implications for the overall connectivity of the population: the home pool, in which contacts can only be formed with other individuals residing in the same patch; and the travel pool, in which contacts can be formed with some residents of, and any other visitors to the patch. We describe in detail the steps required to implement our approach, and present results of an example application.Graphical Abstract

The aim of this paper is to review and analyse relevant factors related to the implementation of corpus linguistics (CL) in higher education. First we set out to describe underlying principles of CL and its developments in relation to theoretical linguistics and its applications in modern teaching practices. Then we attempt to establish how different types of corpora have contributed to the development of direct and indirect approaches in language teaching. We single out Data Driven Learning (DDL) due to its relevance in applied linguistics literature, and examine in detail advantages and drawbacks. Finally, we outline problems concerning the implementation of CL in the classroom since awareness of the limitations of CL is vital for its future success.
