Availability of solar energy as a renewable energy source is very abundant and inexhaustible. Solar water heater is an equipment that utilizes solar energy as a source of energy. The thermal performance of a solar water heater system using absorber plate with phase change material (PCM) as thermal energy storage is presented in this study. Two design of solar water heater collectors with absorber plate variations, i.e. an absorber plate with PCM storage and absorber plate without PCM storage were investigated experimentally and numerically simulation. First, the material properties of paraffin wax as PCM storage was analized analyticaly. Every shape model of solar water heater systems were imported and simulated at three variations of constant solar radiation, i.e. 400  W/m2, 700 W/m2, and 1000 W/m2. The simulation using a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) fluent software. The results showed that the average collector efficiency between absorber plate with and without PCM storage is 70.98 % using experimental study and 67.73 % using numerical simulation study.

The work reported here is the performance profile of a thermosyphon solar water heater developed by the National Centre for Energy Research and Development (NCERD), University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The performance evaluation was based on the mathematical models that describe the test system and some measured experimental data. The effect of some of the design and operating parameters that have been shown to affect the system’s performance was investigated. The parameters considered included the number of glazing covers, glazing cover thickness, tube spacing and the nature of absorber plate material. The performance results indicate that the test system has a maximum average daily collector efficiency of 0.658 and a mean system temperature of 81oC. The efficiency of the collector drops to an average seasonal value of 0.54 with a negligible variation across the three climatic seasons was covered in the study. With a tube spacing not exceeding 10 cm, the performance of the system is optimized irrespective of the nature of the absorber plate material. We found that the number of glazing covers affects the top-loss coefficient of the system depending on the type of absorber plate used. Multiple glazing shows a negligible contribution especially for low temperature application. The glazing cover thickness does not affect the performance of the system significantly.

In order to utilize solar energy to meet the heating demands of a rural residential building during the winter in the northwestern region of China, a hybrid heating system combining solar energy and coal was built. Multiple experiments to monitor its performance were conducted during the winter in 2014 and 2015. In this paper, we analyze the efficiency of the energy utilization of the system and describe a prototype model to determine the thermal efficiency of the coal stove in use. Multiple linear regression was adopted to present the dual function of multiple factors on the daily heat-collecting capacity of the solar water heater; the heat-loss coefficient of the storage tank was detected as well. The prototype model shows that the average thermal efficiency of the stove is 38%, which means that the energy input for the building is divided between the coal and solar energy, 39.5% and 60.5% energy, respectively. Additionally, the allocation of the radiation of solar energy projecting into the collecting area of the solar water heater was obtained which showed 49% loss with optics and 23% with the dissipation of heat, with only 28% being utilized effectively.

This paper describes the application forms of building integrated with solar energy. We explain a solar water heating system; its solar collectors and water storage tanks are placed together. We discuss another solar water heating system, its solar collectors are placed together but its water storage tanks are placed in every resident's home. This paper also introduces the wall-hung SWH and the application of solar refrigeration and solar heating. At last we analyze the problems of the development of solar water heater integrated with modern architecture.

The comparative performance of a cylindrical solar water heating system with and without reflective surface is presented. The major components of the water heater are a transparent cylindrical PVC material acting as the glazing and a copper tube painted black for improved solar energy absorption. One of the systems has it’s under segment, about 45°, lined with an aluminium foil to act as a reflective surface. The two systems were tested under the meteorological condition of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria. Results obtained reveal a maximum exit water temperature from the solar water heater of 68 and 50°C for the reflective and non reflective surface conditions, respectively. The maximum efficiencies were determined as 70% and 40%, respectively for the reflective and non reflective surface conditions while the Hottel-Whillier-Bliss characterization showed that addition of the reflective surface improved the solar water heater’s ability to absorb energy by about 100% and reduced the rate at which it loses by up to 25%. Thus the system with a reflective surface has better capability of converting solar energy to heat for hot water generation.

Hospitality is a relatively large energy user in the tourism sector. The application of renewable energy in this field will certainly save energy and contribute to reduce the effect of global warming. An interesting application to study is the use of solar energy for preparing hot water in hotel. This study is a literature study that explored research articles on solar water heater, especially used in hospitality, that have been published. Studies on solar energy have always increased over the past five years, 66.2% of which were in the field of solar thermal energy, where 11.2% of solar thermal energy researches were related to the use of solar energy for the process of heating water. For the research originating from Indonesia, the figures are 48.7% and 6.6% respectively. There is no research on the use of solar water heater in Indonesia. Research on tourism in Indonesia itself tends to decline. A simple example of simulation about solar water heating system using TRNSYS 18 simulation program was presented to motivate researchers in this field.

Energy saving today is an integral part of the development strategy of agricultural organizations. Considerable attention is paid to the modernization and automation of technological processes in agricultural enterprises, which can improve the quality of work and reduce the cost of production. The direction of modernization is to reduce the consumption of electric energy by improving the water treatment system in livestock complexes. (Research purpose) The research purpose is to determine the potential of solar energy used in the Nizhny Novgorod region and to determine the possibility of its use for water heating in livestock complexes and to consider the cost-effectiveness of using a device to heat water through solar energy. (Materials and methods) Authors used an improved algorithm of Pixer and Laszlo, applied in the NASA project «Surface meteorology and Energy», which allows to calculate the optimal angle of inclination of the device for heating water. (Results and discussion) Designed a mock-up of a livestock complex with a solar water heater installed on the roof, protected by patent for invention No. 2672656. A mathematical model was designed experimentally to predict the results of the plant operation in non-described modes. (Conclusions) The article reveales the optimal capacity of the circulation pump. Authors have created a mathematical model of the device that allows to predict the water heating in a certain period of time. The article presents the calculations on the energy and economic efficiency of using a solar water heater. An electric energy saving of about 30 percent, in the economic equivalent of 35 percent.
