The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is becoming increasingly popular among design engineers using it as one of many product design tools. Safe and cost efficient use of FEA as a product design tool requires training, different from that presently found in undergraduate curriculum of mechanical engineering students. The specific requirements of design engineers for training in the field of FEA have been addressed by the author in a number of professional development courses in FEA, catering specifically to the needs of design engineers. This paper discuses tools and methods used in the development and delivery of these courses and their applicability to the undergraduate courses taught in Canadian Engineering schools.

Finite Element Analysis has become a powerful tool for Industry, specially, in the Design and Development sector. In response to that, Mechanical Engineering Programs followed by Mechanical Engineering Technology programs all across the country are incorporating Finite Element Analysis as a part of their curricula. This paper describes the distribution of Finite Element Analysis amongst the junior and senior level courses in Mechanical Engineering Technology curriculum at Georgia Southern University. The links between these classes with sophomore classes are established. A stand alone senior level elective course that covers more in depth of Finite Element theory is also developed.

Virtual prototype plays an important role in agile designing and manufacturing. Finite Element Analysis and multibody analysis software can also assist engineers with developing and analyzing sophisticated machines. In this paper, a virtual model of an automobile wiper is modeled and used to be simulated under virtual environment of ADAMS, which is a famous tool in mechanical engineering. After simulation, the vibration and noise that the wiper works with have been found and some suggestions are given in discussion and conclusion.

In our institution, we offer a one-quarter long finite element analysis (FEA) class for Mechanical Engineering curriculum. This course teaches computational methods to solve engineering problems using the state of art FEA software ANSYS. The coursework involves teaching fundamental mathematical theories to build the concept, analyzing simple structural problems using matrix algebra, and then solving a wide variety of engineering problems dealing with statics, dynamics, heat transfer and others. Students enrolled in this class solve varieties of problem by analytical approach, finite element approach using matrix algebra, using APDL (ANSYS Parametric Design Language) and ANSYS Workbench. As we are in quarter system, it is challenging to solve additional multidisciplinary complex engineering problems in regular class lectures. Therefore, students enrolled in this class are required to conduct a project solvable by student version of ANSYS within very short time. The project must have adequate engineering complexity conveying interesting knowledge or technical concepts to the entire class. Students have to prepare a brief written report, and share what they have learned with the entire class giving an oral presentation. While a course in FEA could be a common offering in many universities, the author of this paper presents the pedagogical approaches undertaken to successfully implement the course objectives to the undergraduate engineering students. The topics and techniques applied to teach different concepts of FEA to enhance students learning outcomes are addressed in this paper.
