ABSTRACTFlight testing is both vital for collecting data for aeronautic research and at the same time fascinating for its contributors. Taking a glider as a versatile test bed example, this paper presents a transnational measurement campaign within the framework of a collaborative project funded by the European Commission. This project Advanced In-Flight Measurement Techniques 2 (AIM²) is a follow-up of Advanced In-Flight Measurement Techniques (AIM) and dedicated to developing and enhancing promising optical metrology for various flight test applications up to an industrial level.The Image Pattern Correlation Technique (IPCT) and infrared thermography (IRT) are two of these modern non-intrusive measurement methods that were further developed and applied to the glider test bed within the scope of AIM². Focusing on optical deformation measurements with IPCT the experimental setup, the flight testing and results are summarily discussed. Gliders are not commonly used flight test platforms, which is why this contribution concludes with some lessons learned in general and especially related to the presented application. The experience to be shared with the flight testing community addresses equipment preparation, data collection and processing as well as how to meet official requirements and perform test flight operations in a dense controlled airspace.

The achievement of large areas of laminar flow over aircraft engine nacelles offers significant savings in aircraft fuel consumption. Based upon current engine configurations nett sfc benefits of up to 2% are possible. In addition the engine nacelle is ideally suited to the early inclusion of laminar flow technology, being relatively self contained with the possibility of application to existing airframes. In September 1992 a European Consortium managed by Rolls-Royce including MTU and DLR began flight testing of a natural laminar flow nacelle. This programme was later extended by R-R and DLR to flight test a hybrid laminar flow nacelle featuring boundary layer suction and insect contamination protection. The tests evaluated the effects of flight and engine environment, boundary layer transition phenomena, suction system operation and insect contamination avoidance strategies. This paper describes the global conclusions from these flight tests which are a significant milestone leading to the future application of laminar flow technology to engine nacelles.

The Airline Pilot has little to do with Flight Testing for Certification, in fact, apart from a few specialist pilots in the airlines the average airline pilot takes no part in the Flight Test Programme.Once an aircraft has been certificated, however, the airline pilot spends more time on the Flight Deck and has longer to experience the shortcomings of the Certification Programme than anyone else. He is then the Consumer, the man who spends hours with an expensive piece of machinery strapped to him and who suffers over a long period of time any cockpit design defects. For that reason a large part of this paper will be devoted to, I hope, useful criticism of Flight Deck Layouts as they affect the operating crew member.

Flight tests with a German Army Sikorsky CH-53G helicopter were performed to evaluate the applicability and repeatability of the U.S. Army's Aeronautical Design Standard (ADS)-33E-PRF cargo helicopter handling qualities requirements. The objectives were to corroborate earlier findings and to propose modifications if deemed necessary. The CH-53G was chosen because it is the largest helicopter operated by the German Army, and its dedicated role is cargo and troop transport. The quantitative criteria and the associated boundaries as specified in the standard were largely confirmed. Several flight test maneuvers were revised and tailored. Generally, the heights for performing the near-earth maneuvers were increased. The time/tolerances experienced were borderline desired/adequate or adequate.

Abstract Airbus and Boeing are cooperatively presenting this topic dealing with transport aircraft stalls. The paper will begin by defining a stall, followed by a review of requirements, predictive validation and flight testing. There are various ways of designing modern jet transports for the stall regime such as aerodynamic approaches, flight deck indications, and augmentation control laws to deal with the high angle-of-attack (α) arena. The goal of augmented control laws for high α is common – no full aerodynamic stall or loss of climb performance should occur in the operational flight envelope, in Normal flight control modes. The validation techniques employed in preparation for a flight test campaign will follow. These include flight characteristic predictions based on wind-tunnel data as well as pilot-in-the-loop simulation rehearsals. The preparation for flight testing will be reviewed from both the engineer and pilot viewpoints. This will be followed by a review of various flight testing that has been conducted. The paper will close with a brief foray into what the future of transport stalls could be – perhaps protection features in degraded flight control modes? What are the benefits as well as drawbacks to increased augmentation for high α?
