The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of models and methods to obtain the site index, associated with ordinary kriging, to classify productive capacity in eucalyptus stands. Thus, the site quality was performed considering the traditional modeling in clonal stands (2,119 hectares) located in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. 170 plots of 400m2 were randomly allocated, representing a sampling intensity of 0.32%. The dominant height of trees (Assmann) was measured at 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, and 84 months. The site index (S) was estimated by the guide curve and algebraic difference methods, using the models of Schumacher, Chapman and Richards, and Bailey and Clutter. 136 plots were used in the fit and 34 plots in the predictive validation. The spatial dependence of site index was evaluated by experimental semivariogram and adjustment of exponential, spherical, and gaussian models. After confirming the spatial dependence, ordinary kriging was performed to spatialize the site index. For the predictive validation, the dominant height values at 72 months were used. The algebraic difference method provided excellent estimates of site index, which showed spatial dependence in all adjustments, from moderate to strong. In most cases, the gaussian model was the most accurate. It is concluded that the algebraic difference method was more efficient and the site index showed strong spatial dependence at all ages, regardless of the model used. Thus, regression models for site index estimation can be used in combination with ordinary kriging techniques.

Aim: The aim of this study is the predictive validation of red cell distribution width (RDW) in COVID-19 patients. Method: In total, 331 COVID-19 patients were classified as ‘severe’ and ‘nonsevere’ groups based on the WHO standard criteria. The levels of RDW standard deviation (SD) were evaluated as both continuous and categorical variables. Multivariate statistical analyses were used. Results: RDW-SD ≤43 and ≤47 fl thresholds showed high specificity (90.1–91.4%) for diagnosing nonsevere illness and no risk of death. RDW-SD >47 indicated severe illness and a high mortality risk while 43<RDW-SD≤47 indicated severe illness with low risk of death. Conclusion: RDW-SD levels may be a potent independent predictor of the infection severity and mortality probability in COVID-19 patients.

Lack of generalized equations has prevailed in Brazil, because it is assumed that localized or climate-specific equations are needed. This study aimed to develop generalized stem taper and volume equations applicable to 11 eucalyptus clones and evaluate if climate variation impacts the accuracy of the estimates. A total of 693 trees evenly distributed across 11 clones at 21 sites were used for model fittings and predictive validation. The penalized mixed spline (PMS) approach was developed for predicting stem taper and volume along the stem profile. The Schumacher and Hall (1933) equation was used to predict total tree volume, while volume ratio equations were applied to predict merchantable volume. For every fitted equation, an annual climatic variable was included to assess the improvement in model performance. The overall results highlighted that climatic variation does not need to be accounted for in stem taper and volume modeling. All of the equations displayed desirable accuracy, but the generalized PMS equation may be preferred when the forestry enterprise looks to furnish a range of multiple forest products. The generalized total tree volume equation, combined with the ratio equations, is highly recommended when the forestry enterprise produces a single product.

AbstractPrevious research modeling EEG, fMRI and behavioral data has identified three spatially distributed brain networks that activate in temporal sequence, and are thought to enable perceptual decision-making during face-versus-car categorization. These studies have linked late activation (>300ms post stimulus onset) in the lateral occipital cortex (LOC) to object discrimination processes. We applied paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (ppTMS) to LOC at different temporal latencies with the specific prediction, based on these studies, that ppTMS beginning at 400ms after stimulus onset would slow reaction time (RT) performance. Thirteen healthy adults performed a two-alternative forced choice task selecting whether a car or face was present on each trial amidst visual noise pre-titrated to approximate 79% accuracy. ppTMS, with pulses separated by 50ms, was applied at one of five stimulus onset asynchronies: -200, 200, 400, 450, or 500ms, and a sixth no-stimulation condition. As predicted, TMS at 400ms resulted in significant slowing of RTs, providing causal evidence in support of LOC contribution to perceptual decision processing. In addition, TMS delivered at -200ms resulted in faster RTs, indicating early stimulation may result in performance enhancement. These findings build upon correlational EEG and fMRI observations and demonstrate the use of TMS in predictive validation of psychophysiological models.
