A method is proposed for predicting the behavior of a turbulent boundary layer with heat transfer under the influence of transpiration with discrete jets. The boundary layer is treated as a laterally averaged flow and the effects of nonuniformity are introduced through additional momentum and energy source terms in the equations of motion. These nonuniformity interaction terms are obtained using solutions of a set of ordinary differential equations governing the trajectory of jets. The effects of interaction between the jet and boundary layer turbulence structure are also treated. The predictions of the theory are shown to compare well with available discrete jet-boundary layer data.

Measurements have been made in the flow over an axisymmetric cylinder-flare body, in which the boundary layer developed in axial flow over a circular cylinder before diverging over a conical flare. The lateral divergence, and the concave curvature in the transition section between the cylinder and the flare, both tend to destabilize the turbulence. Well downstream of the transition section, the changes in turbulence structure are still significant and can be attributed to lateral divergence alone. The results confirm that lateral divergence alters the structural parameters in much the same way as longitudinal curvature, and can be allowed for by similar empirical formulae. The interaction between curvature and divergence effects in the transition section leads to qualitative differences between the behaviour of the present flow, in which the turbulence intensity is increased everywhere, and the results of Smits, Young & Bradshaw (1979) for a two-dimensional flow with the same curvature but no divergence, in which an unexpected collapse of the turbulence occurred downstream of the curved region.

A pair of oblique waves at low amplitudes is introduced in a supersonic flat-plate boundary layer at Mach 3. Its downstream development and the concomitant process of laminar to turbulent transition is then investigated numerically using linear-stability theory, parabolized stability equations and direct numerical simulations (DNS). In the present paper, the linear regime is studied first in great detail. The focus of the second part is the early and late nonlinear regimes. It is shown how the disturbance wave spectrum is filled up by nonlinear interactions and which flow structures arise and how these structures locally break down to small scales. Finally, the study answers the question whether a fully developed turbulent boundary layer can be reached by oblique breakdown. It is shown that the skin friction develops such as is typical of transitional and turbulent boundary layers. Initially, the skin friction coefficient increases in the streamwise direction in the transitional region and finally decays when the early turbulent state is reached. Downstream of the maximum in the skin friction, the flow loses its periodicity in time and possesses characteristic mean-flow and spectral properties of a turbulent boundary layer. The DNS data clearly demonstrate that oblique breakdown can lead to a fully developed turbulent boundary layer and therefore it is a relevant mechanism for transition in two-dimensional supersonic boundary layers.

The velocity field and turbulence structure in the near wake of a thick flat plate with a tapered trailing-edge geometry are examined using both hydrogen-bubble flow visualization and hot-film anemometry measurements. Tests were conducted for Re1 = 8.5 × 105 in the region 0 < x+ < 6400 behind the trailing edge. The probe and visualization results indicate a similarity between both (i) velocity and turbulence structure variations wih x+ in the near wake, and (ii) the corresponding changes in similar flow characteristics with y+ within a turbulent boundary layer. In particular, visualization data in the vicinity of the wake centreline reveal the existence of strong streamwise flow structures in the region close (x+ < 270) to the trailing edge. The streamwise orientation of the observed structures diminishes as x+ increases. From hot-film measurements, two separate regions along the wake centreline can be distinguished: (i) a linear growth region which extends over 0 < x+ < 100, wherein the centreline velocity varies linearly with x+; and (ii) a logarithmic growth region for x+ > 270, wherein the centreline velocity varies as log x+. The similarity in behaviour between these regions and the comparable wall region of a turbulent boundary layer suggests the existence of a common functionality. This similarity is demonstrated by a simple linear relationship of the form y+ = Kx+, which is shown to approximately collapse the velocity behaviour both across a turbulent boundary layer and along the wake centreline to a unified set of empirical relationships.
