The harsh environment on the lunar surface presents unique technological challenges for space exploration. This paper presents research on the design and development of the Telescope-deployment High-vacuum teleOperated Rover (THOR), currently being built and tested in the Lunar and Airless Bodies Simulator (LABS) facility at the University of Colorado Boulder. This rover is fabricated entirely out of cost-effective commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and materials. THOR can potentially survive for more than one simulated year in conditions similar to that of the lunar environment, demonstrating the successful initial results of a first phase research study on material and electronic survivability in an extreme environment such as the Moon. This research aims to gauge the economic impact of the measures set out in the Strategic Infrastructure and Transport Plan, 2005–2020, as implemented by the Spanish government, on regional development. Contributing to regional development, this plan extends high capacity road networks and high performance rail networks in Spain between 2005 and 2020. To evaluate the plan, this research relies on an innovative technique based on panel data and accessibility indicators, which can quantify the plan's economic impact on regional development. Findings from the study provide a valuable tool for economic, geographic, and territorial assessments of policies implemented in the field of transport and infrastructure, whilst also pointing to guidelines for the design and development of further proposals and actions.

The paper presents the design and development of a new robotized assembly system of optical backplanes in high-capacity ICT (Information and Communication Technology) apparatus, mainly used for switching stations and distribution networks. The optical backplane solution consists of several optical fiber ribbons positioned on a planar backplane according to an innovative and optimized full-mesh layout where the overall optical interconnection is partialized into a plurality of different independent sub-circuits. Each optical interconnection sub-circuit consists of optical fiber ribbons with standardized optical and mechanical interfaces and customized components that have to be carefully and precisely assembled in order to achieve connections with low optical power losses. The paper describes the method and the main devices and tools conceived for the automatic assembly of optical interconnection sub-circuits, highlighting the critical aspects and the proposed solutions towards the automatized assembly of the whole optical backplane.

British Rail are taking delivery of six high capacity rail cranes. They are the first cranes of this capacity to be purchased for eighteen years and represent significant advances over previous designs. This paper gives background information on the choosing of specification requirements and the design concept and gives details of the design development for the ‘as made’ crane.
