Most project management research focuses almost exclusively on explanatory analyses. Evaluation of the explanatory power of statistical models is generally based on F-type statistics and the R 2 metric, followed by an assessment of the model parameters (e.g., beta coefficients) in terms of their significance, size, and direction. However, these measures are not indicative of a model’s predictive power, which is central for deriving managerial recommendations. We recommend that project management researchers routinely use additional metrics, such as the mean absolute error or the root mean square error, to accurately quantify their statistical models’ predictive power.

Conversations about projects and project management are changing. Project Management researchers and practitioners are no longer only focused on the processes and practices, but increasingly looking for ‘some truths’ of project management (Morris, 2016) – truth that can be as likely found when considering values as much as knowledge. The practical applications of agile methods and their impact on the productivity and efficiency of software development dominate the agile literature. We analyzed 827 academic articles with bibliometric techniques to explore the role project management research played in the development of the academic agile discourse. Bibliometric analyses over two time periods reveal that project management–related topics form a distinct stream of research in the second time period but not in the first. Furthermore, our results reveal that the academic agile discussion has been mainly unidirectional. This situation offers many opportunities for project management researchers to contribute to the agile discourse.

Operations management as a knowledge domain appears to be gaining position as a respected and dynamic academic discipline that is undergoing constant development. Therefore, from time to time it is sensible to monitor and analyze its developments by summarizing new features into comprehensive ideas. To support this necessity, the major publications/citations in this field and their evolving research utility over the decades are identified in this chapter. Because the goal of this book is to present the advancements in the area of operations management research, especially of advanced topics related to the layout design for cellular manufacturing, the second part of this chapter is focused on developments in cellular manufacturing approaches and methods by mapping literature sources during the last decade. Finally, the relationships between concept or/and tools in both areas that are empirically considered as consequences or coincidences are identified.
